Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of PDFs does this tool support?

Any PDF with an AcroForm (interactive form fields). This includes tax forms, job applications, government forms, contracts with fillable fields, invoices, surveys β€” anything where the form was created with input fields rather than being a scanned image or flat text PDF.

If your PDF is a scanned document or was distributed without form fields, use the PDF to Text or PDF to Excel tool instead.

What does each export format look like?

JSON β€” a key-value object with each field name mapped to its value. Perfect for APIs, databases, and automation scripts.

CSV β€” comma-separated table with columns for Field Name, Type, Value (and optionally Page). Opens directly in Excel and Google Sheets.

XLSX β€” a native Excel workbook with formatted column widths and header styling. Same columns as CSV.

Plain Text β€” a simple fieldname: value list, one per line. Ideal for emailing or pasting into a note.

What if a field appears blank but the PDF shows a value?

This can happen in two cases:

1. Flattened form β€” the PDF was already flattened by another tool, so the values are baked into the page as text and there are no interactive fields to extract. In this case, use PDF to Text instead.

2. Non-standard field appearance β€” some PDFs store the visible value in the appearance stream rather than the field value. This is rare with well-built forms but does happen with some older tools.

How are checkboxes and radio buttons represented?

Checkboxes β€” reported as true (checked) or false (unchecked) in JSON, and as Yes/No in CSV and text output.

Radio buttons β€” reported as the export value of the selected option. If you have a Yes/No radio group and "Yes" is selected, the value is the option name (e.g. "Yes" or "opt_yes" depending on how the form was built). Empty if nothing is selected.

Can I extract from multiple PDFs at once?

Not in this tool version. But you can extract each PDF individually and combine the JSON or CSV files in a spreadsheet or script. The exported CSV files share the same column structure, so they append cleanly.

Is my PDF and its form data uploaded anywhere?

Never. Everything β€” reading the PDF, extracting field values, and generating exports β€” happens entirely in your browser using pdf-lib and SheetJS. Your form data (which may contain sensitive personal information) never leaves your device. You can verify by opening DevTools β†’ Network tab and confirming zero outbound requests after page load.
