Frequently Asked Questions

What are placeholders and how do they work?

Placeholders are short tokens wrapped in curly braces that get replaced with real values on each page:
• {page} — current page number
• {total} — total number of pages
• {date} — today's date (in the format you choose)
• {title} — the document title you enter in the sidebar
• {filename} — the original PDF's filename
Example: "Page {page} of {total}" becomes "Page 3 of 12" on page 3.

What's the difference between headers and footers?

Headers appear at the top of the page and footers at the bottom. Both have three independent slots (left, center, right) so you can put e.g. the document title on the left and the page number on the right. Use the tabs at the top of the sidebar to switch between editing the header and the footer.

Can I add a line between the header/footer and body?

Yes. Enable "Show line under header" or "Show line above footer" in the Layout section. By default the line spans the same width as the content area (from side margin to side margin). Check "Line spans full page width" to make it run edge-to-edge.

Can I use different headers on different pages?

Not in a single pass — but you can apply the tool multiple times: run it once with a page range like 1-5, download the result, upload it again, and use range 6-10 with different text. The output PDF is fully re-uploadable.

Does the header/footer count the first page?

Yes, by default. If you enable Skip first page, page 1 gets no header or footer — but {page} on page 2 still shows "2" (matching the physical page number). To renumber from 1, set the Start Number to 1 while skipping the first page — page 2 will then show "1".

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. Everything happens in your browser using pdf.js and pdf-lib. Your file never leaves your device.

Do non-Latin scripts work?

Not currently — the tool uses PDF's built-in fonts which only support Latin-1 characters. For Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or Cyrillic text you'll need to embed a custom font, which is on our roadmap.
