Frequently Asked Questions

What is PDF metadata, and why remove it?

PDF metadata is a set of hidden fields stored inside the file β€” Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer, and dates. It's used by search engines, document management systems, and PDF readers to identify the document.

Removing it is a privacy measure. The Author field often contains a real name, the Creator field reveals your software and its version, and the creation date shows when the file was made. If you're posting a PDF publicly, cleaning metadata prevents leaking this information.

What's the difference between Info Dictionary and XMP?

Info dictionary β€” an old-style key-value store inside the PDF's trailer. Contains Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer, and dates. Universally supported.

XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) β€” a newer, XML-based metadata format embedded as a separate stream in the PDF. It can hold much more information including camera details, editing history, color profiles, and custom fields from Adobe apps. Even if the Info dictionary is empty, XMP often contains significant data.

For thorough privacy, remove both.

Will removing metadata change how my PDF looks?

No. The visual content β€” text, images, form fields, annotations, bookmarks, and layout β€” is untouched. Only the hidden metadata fields and (if you choose) JavaScript, attachments, and dates are removed. The PDF renders identically.

Why does the tool show "already clean"?

This means our scanner didn't find any user-facing metadata (Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, or Producer). However, an XMP stream may still be present, and dates may still reveal when the file was created. You can still run the cleaner β€” the checkboxes are pre-selected based on what we found.

Can metadata be recovered after cleaning?

No β€” once the new PDF is saved, the metadata fields are rewritten from scratch. The original values are not present in the output file. However, always keep a backup of the original if you might need the metadata later.

Does the tool remove annotations, form fields, or bookmarks?

No. Only metadata, XMP, JavaScript (optional), attachments (optional), and dates (optional) are removed. Annotations, form fields, bookmarks, and outlines are preserved.

For a tool that goes further (removes hidden scripts, actions, and embedded content), see Sanitize PDF.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. Everything happens in your browser using pdf-lib. Your file never leaves your device. You can verify this by opening DevTools β†’ Network tab β€” zero outbound requests beyond the initial page load.
