Frequently Asked Questions
PDF metadata (also called "document properties" or "document info") is a set of hidden fields stored inside the PDF file. Common fields include Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator (the app that made the original document), Producer (the library that created the PDF), and creation/modification dates. They're used by search engines, document management systems, and PDF readers to identify the document.
Common reasons: fixing a wrong title so it appears correctly in the browser tab and PDF reader; adding your name as author for attribution; setting keywords so your document is searchable in a DMS; removing software info for privacy (e.g. before sharing publicly); or back-dating/forward-dating a document for archival purposes.
No β only the metadata dictionary is modified. All pages, images, text, annotations, form fields, bookmarks, and outlines stay exactly as they were. The PDF renders identically before and after.
Creator is the application that originally created the source document (e.g. "Microsoft Word", "Google Docs", "LibreOffice Writer"). Producer is the library or software that converted the document into PDF (e.g. "Adobe PDF Library", "Skia/PDF", "wkhtmltopdf"). Editing them doesn't affect the file, but blank values look cleaner in privacy-sensitive documents.
Yes β just clear every field and save. For a dedicated one-click "strip everything" tool, see Remove Metadata.
Yes. After downloading, open the file in Acrobat and go to File β Properties (or press Ctrl/Cmd + D). All your edits will be visible in the Description tab. Other PDF readers, macOS Preview, and Windows Explorer's details pane will also display them.
No. Everything happens in your browser using pdf-lib. Your file never leaves your device, and nothing is ever transmitted. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it will still work.
