Frequently Asked Questions
Attachments are whole files (spreadsheets, ZIPs, sub-PDFs, etc.) packaged inside the PDF as separate embedded objects. They don't appear on any page β they're just cargo. Images are visual content drawn on pages. You can attach a Word document to a PDF and it never shows up in the visible pages. This tool extracts those attached files. For images, use Extract Images.
Most PDFs have no embedded attachments. Attachments are added deliberately by whoever created the PDF β like when someone bundles a spreadsheet with an invoice, or attaches source files to a report. If you were expecting a file and it's not showing up, the file might be:
- An image drawn on a page β try Extract Images
- A link to an external file (not embedded) β the URL would appear in text
- Stored using a non-standard method this tool doesn't recognize
Yes β for many types. Text files (TXT, CSV, JSON, XML, MD, HTML) show inline. Images (PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, SVG) render in the preview modal. Office documents, PDFs, and archives can't be previewed in-browser β for those you'll see an icon and can download directly.
Anything. The PDF spec doesn't restrict attachment types. Common ones: XLSX, DOCX, CSV, ZIP, PNG, JPG, XML, sub-PDFs, and TXT. Some PDFs even embed executable files, which is why PDF attachments are a known malware vector β never open attachments from untrusted PDFs. This tool extracts them but doesn't run them.
No. We only read the embedded files and hand you copies. Your original PDF is untouched and stays on your device.
No. Everything runs in your browser using pdf.js. Your file never leaves your device.
