Tip: Corner watermarks at 40–60% opacity look professional. For anti-theft protection, enable Tile across image and use 15–25% opacity.

What Is a Watermark?

A watermark is a semi-transparent text or logo overlay placed on top of an image. The name comes from the traditional paper-making process, where a translucent design was pressed into paper during manufacture and became visible when held up to the light. Digital watermarks work the same way — visible, but subtle enough not to ruin the underlying image.

Watermarks serve three main purposes:

Text vs logo watermarks

TypeBest forTypical placement
TextCopyright notices, URLs, author names, datesBottom-right corner
LogoBrand consistency, photography portfolios, product photosBottom corner, centred, or tiled
Tiled textProofs, stock previews, draft imagesRepeated diagonally across the whole image
Tiled logoAnti-theft protection on client proofsRepeated diagonally

Choosing an opacity level

The opacity slider goes from 5% to 100%. Here's the practical range for each use case:

OpacityUse case
5–15%Tiled anti-theft watermarks — visible on close inspection, unobtrusive at a glance
20–35%Centred watermarks on previews and proofs
40–60%Corner branding watermarks — the standard for portfolio and product images
70–100%Legal notices, "DRAFT" stamps, emergency copyright marks

Positioning your watermark

The 3×3 position grid gives you nine presets: four corners, four edge midpoints, and the centre. For most use cases, a bottom-right corner watermark works best — it's visible without competing with the subject of the photo. Centre watermarks are common on proofs. Tiled watermarks fill the whole image for maximum protection.

You can also drag the watermark directly on the preview to place it anywhere. This is useful when the corner doesn't work because the image has an important element there.

Do watermarks actually protect images?

Honest answer: they discourage casual reuse, but they don't prevent it. Anyone with basic Photoshop skills can remove a corner watermark in a few minutes. That's why stock photo sites use tiled watermarks — a repeated diagonal pattern across the entire image is dramatically harder to remove without destroying the image itself.

For casual protection of personal photos and social media posts, a corner watermark is enough. For professional portfolios and client proofs, use tile mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a watermark?
A watermark is a semi-transparent text or logo overlay placed on top of an image. It's used to establish ownership, prevent unauthorised reuse, brand photographs, or mark drafts and proofs.
Should I use a text watermark or an image watermark?
Text watermarks are quick to add and perfect for names, URLs, or copyright notices. Image watermarks (logos) are ideal for brand consistency and look more professional for photography portfolios or product images.
What opacity should I use for a watermark?
For corner watermarks, 40–60% opacity is usually best — visible but not distracting. For tiled/anti-theft watermarks, 15–30% keeps the image usable while making it hard to remove.
Can I put a watermark in the centre of the image?
Yes. Pick the centre position from the 3×3 grid, or drag the watermark to any spot on the preview. You can also rotate it (common for anti-theft watermarks) or enable tile mode to repeat it across the whole image.
What is tile mode?
Tile mode repeats the watermark across the entire image in a diagonal grid pattern. This is the standard way to watermark proof images or stock photos — it makes the image usable for preview but impossible to use commercially without permission.
Does adding a watermark reduce image quality?
No. The base image is drawn at full resolution and the watermark is composited on top. Quality only changes if you export as JPEG at a low quality setting.
Can I remove a watermark later?
Not from this tool — watermarking is destructive by design. Always keep an unmarked original. If you need to change the watermark later, re-apply it to the original rather than the watermarked version.
Why does my PNG logo look different when I export as JPEG?
PNG supports transparency, but JPEG does not. If your logo has transparent areas, they'll be filled with the background colour you choose (white by default) when exporting as JPEG. For best results with a transparent logo, export as PNG or WebP.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. All watermarking happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image and your watermark never leave your device.
Is this watermark tool free?
Yes. It is 100% free, requires no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser. No watermarks on the output, no file limits, no premium tier.
