What Is Image Rotation?

Image rotation turns a picture around its centre point by a specified number of degrees. It's one of the simplest image operations, but the quality of the result depends entirely on the angle you choose. There are two very different cases:

How each rotation mode works

RotationWhat happensNew dimensions
90° leftTop row becomes left column (bottom-to-top)H × W (swapped)
90° rightTop row becomes right column (top-to-bottom)H × W (swapped)
180°Grid flipped both horizontally and verticallyW × H (unchanged)

Why do the corners become empty?

Imagine a photograph printed on a sheet of paper. If you rotate the sheet by 37°, it no longer fills the frame it came in — the four corners are empty. The same happens digitally:

You can turn on Trim transparent edges to crop the rotated image down to just the non-transparent region. This removes the empty corners but also cuts off part of the actual image. Useful when you want a "tight" result.

When to use each rotation type

About EXIF orientation

Phone cameras often save photos sideways and add an EXIF Orientation tag that tells viewers how to display them. Browsers respect this tag, but many apps and services don't. Rotating with this tool bakes the correct orientation into the pixel data, so the result displays correctly everywhere — including apps that ignore EXIF.

Output format comparison

FormatBest forTransparencyFile size
PNGScreenshots, text, logos, sharp edges✅ YesLargest
JPEGPhotographs, social media, web images❌ No (fills with colour)Smallest
WebPModern websites✅ Yes25–35% smaller than JPEG

PNG is the default because it preserves transparency and quality perfectly. Switch to JPEG if you're working with photographs and file size matters.

Common use cases

Fix Sideways Photos

Phone photos that save in the wrong orientation — fix them instantly.

Straighten Scans

Scanned documents come out 1–2° off. Use the slider for a precise fix.

Creative Composition

Rotate graphics diagonally for magazine-style layouts and social posts.

EXIF Fixes

Bake correct orientation into the pixels so it displays right everywhere.

Print Orientation

Turn landscape photos into portrait for framed prints or photo books.

Wallpapers

Rotate desktop wallpapers to portrait for phone screens.

Product Photos

Match orientation across a product catalogue for consistency.

Social Media

Fit portrait photos into landscape Instagram, Twitter or Facebook slots.

Privacy and security

This rotate image tool runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image is never uploaded, never stored, and never transmitted to any server. The processing happens on your device, which means the tool works offline once the page has loaded. Safe for private photos, confidential documents and personal images.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I rotate an image online?
Upload your image, then press one of the preset buttons (90° left, 90° right, 180°) or drag the angle slider for any custom rotation. The preview updates live, and you click Download Rotated Image to save the result.
Does rotating reduce image quality?
Rotating by 90°, 180° or 270° is lossless — every pixel is preserved exactly. Rotating by arbitrary angles like 37° requires resampling and may slightly soften edges. For the best quality, use the 90° presets when possible.
Which image formats are supported?
You can upload JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP files. Output can be saved as PNG (lossless, default), JPEG (smaller) or WebP (modern format). PNG is recommended for images with transparency or text.
Why are the corners of my rotated image white or black?
When you rotate by a non-right angle, the image no longer fills its rectangle, so the corners become transparent. If you export as PNG or WebP, those corners stay transparent. If you export as JPEG (which has no transparency), the corners are filled with the background colour you choose — white by default.
What is the difference between rotating left and rotating right?
Rotate left (90° counter-clockwise) moves the top edge to the left side. Rotate right (90° clockwise) moves the top edge to the right side. They produce mirror-image results of each other. For a 180° rotation, both directions produce the same result.
Can I straighten a slightly tilted photo?
Yes. Use the angle slider for small adjustments — typically 1° to 5° is enough to straighten a tilted scan or handheld photo. Enable a background colour if you export as JPEG and the corners become visible.
What does "Trim transparent edges" do?
It crops the rotated image down to just the non-transparent region, removing the empty corners. This gives a "tight" result but also cuts off part of the actual image. Useful when you want a compact output without empty space.
Does rotating remove EXIF metadata?
Yes. Re-encoding through the Canvas API strips most metadata — including camera model, GPS location and date taken. This is generally a privacy win. The rotation is baked into the pixels, so the result displays correctly everywhere.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. All rotation happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image never leaves your device — nothing is uploaded, stored or transmitted.
Is this rotate image tool free?
Yes. It is 100% free, requires no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser. There are no watermarks, no file limits and no premium tier.
