What Is Image Flipping?
Image flipping mirrors a picture across a horizontal or vertical axis — like a reflection in a mirror. Unlike rotating, which spins the image around a point, flipping always preserves the image's dimensions and orientation. A landscape photo stays landscape; a portrait stays portrait. Only the direction of the mirror changes.
Flipping is fundamentally different from rotation, and the distinction matters:
Flipping vs rotating — the key difference
| Operation | What changes | Dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| Flip horizontal | Left ↔ right mirrored | Unchanged |
| Flip vertical | Top ↔ bottom mirrored | Unchanged |
| Flip both | Both axes mirrored (equals a 180° rotation) | Unchanged |
| Rotate 90° | Image turned sideways | W and H swapped |
| Rotate 180° | Upside down and left-right reversed | Unchanged |
The output looks different because flipping preserves the handedness of the image (a left hand still looks like a left hand), while rotation changes it.
The three flip directions
- Horizontal flip — mirrors the image left-to-right, as if you turned a page. The left side of the photo now appears on the right and vice versa.
- Vertical flip — mirrors the image top-to-bottom, as if you flipped it over on a horizontal axis. The sky appears at the bottom; the floor at the top.
- Both — applies both mirrors in sequence. The result is identical to rotating the image 180°. You get the visual effect of the image being "turned over" both ways.
Is flipping lossless?
Yes — completely. Every pixel in the image keeps its exact colour value and just moves to a mirrored position. There's no resampling, no interpolation, no data loss. Flipping an image and then flipping it again on the same axis returns the exact original pixels, byte for byte.
This is why flipping is always safer than arbitrary rotation. Rotation by anything other than a multiple of 90° requires interpolation; flipping never does.
When to use each flip direction
- Fix a selfie — front-facing cameras mirror your face by default. Flip horizontally to see yourself the way others see you.
- Fix a scan — some scanners output mirrored images. Flip horizontally to correct them.
- Correct a photo taken through a mirror — flip horizontally to un-mirror the reflection.
- Match a lighting direction — if a subject is lit from the left but you need lighting from the right, a horizontal flip fixes it.
- Create a reflection effect — flip vertically and place the flipped image below the original for a water reflection.
- Design symmetry — flip both to create a rotated companion image for a mirrored layout.
- Fix upside-down photos — flip vertically. (Rotate 180° also works, but flipping is one action instead of two.)
About text and readable content
Flipping makes any text in the image unreadable — mirror text or upside-down text. This is fine for artistic effect or for fixing a pre-mirrored photo, but it's a bad idea for images that contain:
- Book covers, signs, labels, packaging
- Documents, business cards, screenshots with text
- Logos with text, signatures, watermarks
- Photos of people wearing branded clothing with visible text
If your image has important text and you need to fix orientation, use Rotate Image instead — it can flip in a way that keeps text readable.
Common use cases
Un-mirror Selfies
Front-facing cameras mirror selfies. Flip horizontally to see yourself as others do.
Match Lighting
Flip horizontally to change which side of the subject is lit.
Reflection Effects
Flip vertically and combine with the original for a water reflection.
Create Symmetry
Flip horizontal next to the original for symmetric designs.
Fix Scans
Correct a scan that came out mirrored due to scanner settings.
Fix Upside-Down
Flip vertically to correct an upside-down photo in one action.
Portrait Improvement
Some faces photograph better from one direction — flip to choose.
Design Mirroring
Create mirrored tiles, patterns and abstract compositions.
Privacy and security
