About Volume Conversion

Volume measures three-dimensional space — how much liquid a container holds, how much a recipe needs, or how much cargo a ship carries. Unlike length and weight, volume has three different families of units that are still in active daily use: the metric system (litres and millilitres), the US customary system (gallons, cups, tablespoons), and the British Imperial system (Imperial gallons, pints and fluid ounces).

The tricky part: US and Imperial units share many names but not sizes. A US pint is 473 mL; an Imperial pint is 568 mL. A US gallon is 3.785 L; an Imperial gallon is 4.546 L — about 20% larger. When converting a UK recipe to US measures (or the reverse), you must use the correct system or you will end up with an off-by-20% result.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many litres in a US gallon?
There are exactly 3.785411784 litres in one US gallon. This is the exact definitional value — the US gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches, and one inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so 231 × 2.54³ = 3,785.411784 cm³ = 3.785411784 litres.
How many litres in an Imperial gallon?
There are exactly 4.54609 litres in one Imperial gallon. The Imperial gallon was originally defined as the volume of 10 pounds of distilled water at a specific temperature, then redefined in 1985 to be exactly 4.54609 litres. It is about 20% larger than the US gallon.
How many millilitres in a cup?
A US customary cup is 236.5882365 mL. A US "legal" cup used on nutrition labels is exactly 240 mL. A metric cup (used in Australia, Canada and New Zealand) is exactly 250 mL. When following a recipe, check which cup the source uses.
How many tablespoons in a cup?
There are 16 US tablespoons in one US cup, or 8 US fluid ounces. This is a definitional relationship — the US cup is exactly 8 US fluid ounces, and 1 US fluid ounce is exactly 2 US tablespoons.
What is the difference between a US and an Imperial pint?
A US liquid pint is 473.176473 mL (one-eighth of a US gallon). An Imperial pint is 568.26125 mL (one-eighth of an Imperial gallon). The Imperial pint is about 20% larger. The British "pint of beer" is an Imperial pint; the American "pint of beer" is a US pint.
How do I convert a US recipe to metric?
Use the US units in this tool: 1 US cup → 236.59 mL, 1 US tablespoon → 14.79 mL, 1 US teaspoon → 4.93 mL, 1 US fluid ounce → 29.57 mL. If the recipe is British or Australian, use the Imperial units instead — 1 Imperial pint → 568.26 mL, 1 Imperial fluid ounce → 28.41 mL.
Is this volume converter free?
Yes. It is 100% free, requires no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser.
Is my input sent to a server?
No. All conversions happen locally in JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged.
How accurate is the conversion?
Every conversion factor used here is the exact definitional value. The only source of rounding is the precision setting — increase decimal places for more digits.
What is a cubic metre?
A cubic metre is the volume of a cube measuring 1 metre on each side. It equals exactly 1000 litres, or 35.3146667 cubic feet. It is the SI unit of volume and is commonly used for shipping container capacity, concrete measurements and water volume.
