What Is a Text Sorter?

A text sorter rearranges lines of text into a specific order — alphabetically, numerically, by length, reversed or randomly. It's one of the simplest tools you'll ever need, but incredibly useful when you have a messy list to organize.

Whether you're cleaning up a list of names, sorting product SKUs by number, or randomizing entries for a giveaway, a text sorter does the job in one click — no spreadsheets, no scripts, no manual work.

The 9 sort modes

Mode What It Does Example Result
A → Z Alphabetical ascending order. apple, banana, cherry
Z → A Alphabetical descending order. cherry, banana, apple
Natural A→Z Alphanumeric: treats numbers as numbers. file2, file10, file20
Length ↑ Shortest line first, longest last. cat, apple, banana
Length ↓ Longest line first, shortest last. banana, apple, cat
Numeric ↑ Sorts by numeric value (small to large). 2, 5, 10, 100
Numeric ↓ Sorts by numeric value (large to small). 100, 10, 5, 2
Reverse Reverses the current order. last line becomes first
Shuffle Randomizes the order. random permutation

Example: sorting a list

Before
banana apple cherry date apple elderberry
After (A→Z, deduped)
apple banana cherry date elderberry

Options explained

Natural sorting vs alphabetical sorting

Natural sorting is the killer feature that most online sorters don't have. Here's why it matters:

Alphabetical sort of "file1", "file2", "file10", "file20"

file1, file10, file2, file20

Because "10" comes before "2" in character-by-character comparison ("1" < "2"). That's technically correct but intuitively wrong.

Natural sort of the same list

file1, file2, file10, file20

Because "10" is treated as the number ten, which is greater than 2. This is how humans expect lists to be sorted.

Natural sorting is essential for file names, version numbers, product IDs and any list where the numbers matter.

Numeric sort vs alphabetical sort

Similar principle. If you have a list of prices, quantities or IDs, you want numeric sorting:

Numeric sort parses each line as a number and sorts by value. Non-numeric lines are sorted to the end. Handles decimals and negatives.

Common use cases

Email Lists

Sort and dedupe email lists before importing to your CRM.

Keyword Lists

Alphabetize SEO keyword research lists for easy review.

Product SKUs

Sort inventory codes numerically or naturally.

URL Lists

Alphabetize URLs from sitemaps or backlink exports.

Name Lists

Sort guest lists, attendance lists or team rosters by name.

Random Giveaways

Shuffle contest entries to pick a random winner.

Code Imports

Sort import statements or dependency lists alphabetically.

CSV Cleanup

Sort data rows before importing to a database.

Sorting stability and duplicates

Our sorting algorithm is stable. If two lines compare as equal (for example "Apple" and "apple" when case-insensitive), the one that appeared first in the original list stays first in the sorted list. This is the same behaviour as Python's sorted(), which preserves original ordering for equal elements.

How does it compare to Unix sort?

Privacy and security

This text sorter runs entirely in your browser. Your text is never sent to any server, never stored anywhere, and disappears the moment you close the tab. Safe for confidential lists, private email addresses, unreleased data and any content you want to keep local.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a text sorter?
A text sorter is a tool that rearranges lines of text into a specific order — alphabetically, numerically, by length, reversed or randomly. It's used to organize lists, sort data for analysis, prepare CSVs and randomize items.
What does natural sorting mean?
Natural sorting (also called alphanumeric sorting) treats sequences of digits as actual numbers rather than characters. So file2 comes before file10 — instead of file10 coming before file2 like it would with plain alphabetical sorting. It's the intuitive ordering humans expect.
Does sorting work with numbers?
Yes. The numeric sort mode parses each line as a number and sorts by numeric value — so 2 comes before 10 (whereas alphabetically, 10 comes before 2). Non-numeric lines are sorted to the end. This is perfect for sorting IDs, prices, quantities and measurements.
Should I sort case-sensitively?
For most real-world use cases, no — case-insensitive sorting gives natural-looking results because apple, Banana and cherry sort together. When ON, case-sensitive sorting places all uppercase letters before all lowercase ones (Apple before apple), which matches ASCII ordering but rarely matches what users expect.
Can I remove duplicates while sorting?
Yes. Enable the "Remove duplicates" option and the sorter will keep only one copy of each line before sorting. Useful when you have a messy list with repeated entries and want a clean, unique, sorted output.
What is the difference between sort by length ascending and descending?
Ascending sorts from shortest line to longest. Descending sorts from longest to shortest. This is useful for content audits (identify unusually long or short entries), sorting tweets by character count, or analyzing title lengths.
Is the sort stable?
Yes. Our algorithm is stable — if two lines compare as equal, the one that appeared first in the original list stays first in the sorted list. This matches Python's sorted() behaviour.
Is this text sorter free?
Yes. It is 100% free, requires no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser. Your text never leaves your device.
