What Is Reverse Text?

Reverse text means flipping the order of characters, words or lines so they read backwards. It's a fun word puzzle, a useful programming aid, and a creative tool for content creators. Different reverse modes work for different purposes:

The 6 reverse modes

Mode What It Does Example Result
Reverse characters Flips every letter, digit and punctuation in the whole text. Hello world → dlrow olleH
Reverse words Keeps each word intact, but reverses the order of words. the cat sat → sat cat the
Reverse lines Keeps each line intact, but reverses the order of lines. line1\nline2 → line2\nline1
Flip each word Reverses the letters inside each word, keeping word order. the cat → eht tac
Reverse word order per line Reverses word order within each line, keeps line order. the cat\nsat down → cat the\ndown sat
Full mirror Reverses characters AND line order — a complete flip. abc\ndef → fed\ncba

Options explained

Reverse text and palindromes

A palindrome is a word, phrase or number that reads the same forwards and backwards. Palindromes are reverse text's most famous application — try reversing "racecar", "madam", "level" or "A man a plan a canal panama" and you get the exact same text back.

Try our Palindrome Checker if you want to quickly test any word or phrase for palindrome-ness, with letter-by-letter comparison.

Unicode and emoji handling

Our reverse tool uses code-point-aware iteration, so emoji (😀, 🎉, ❤️) and non-Latin scripts (Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, Japanese, Korean) are treated as single units rather than being broken into random bytes. Try reversing "Hello 👋 world 🌍" and you get "🌍 dlrow 👋 olleH" — the emoji stay intact.

Some complex multi-codepoint emoji (flags, family emoji with zero-width joiners, skin-tone modifiers) may render unexpectedly when reversed, because their visual structure depends on the order of combining characters. This is a Unicode limitation, not a tool limitation.

Common use cases

Puzzles & Games

Create mirror-text puzzles, hidden messages and word games.

Palindrome Testing

Reverse a phrase to check if it reads the same forwards and backwards.

Programming

Quick string reversal for testing code or debugging algorithms.

Art & Instagram

Create backwards captions or mirror-text for visual effects.

Simple Obfuscation

Reverse text as a trivial spoiler-hider for puzzles and quizzes.

Star Patterns

Reverse line order to flip triangle patterns vertically.

Reverse Lists

Turn a top-to-bottom list upside down without retyping.

Language Learning

Practice reading backwards and word-order manipulation.

Reverse text vs mirror text vs upside-down text

Frequently Asked Questions

What is reverse text?
Reverse text means flipping the order of characters, words or lines so they read backwards. Hello world reversed character-by-character becomes dlrow olleH. Hello world reversed word-by-word becomes world Hello. It's used for puzzles, games, jokes, testing palindromes and creative writing.
What is the difference between reversing characters and reversing words?
Reversing characters flips every individual letter — cat becomes tac. Reversing words keeps each word intact but changes the order of words — the cat sat becomes sat cat the. Reversing lines changes the order of lines without changing anything inside them.
What does "flip each word" do?
"Flip each word" reverses the letters inside every word but keeps the words in their original order. So the cat sat becomes eht tac tas. It's different from "Reverse characters" which reverses the entire text as one string, joining the last word to the start.
Can I reverse emoji and Unicode characters?
Yes. Our tool uses code-point-aware reversal, so emoji like 😀 and characters from non-Latin scripts (Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, emoji) are treated as single units. That said, some complex emoji (like flags or family emoji with zero-width joiners) may render unpredictably when reversed — that's a limitation of Unicode rendering, not our tool.
Is reverse text the same as mirror text?
Not exactly. Reverse text flips the order of characters (so ABC becomes CBA). Mirror text flips each character left-to-right visually using special Unicode mirror characters. Reverse text is what most people mean by "backwards text".
Can I undo the reversal?
Yes. Reverse text is its own inverse — if you reverse reversed text, you get the original back. For "Reverse word order" and "Reverse lines" the same applies. Just copy the output, paste it as input, and click the same reverse mode again.
What does "Preserve line count" mean?
When ON, reversing characters treats each line separately so lines stay on their own rows. When OFF, the entire text is reversed as one continuous string, so characters from the end of the last line move to the start of the first line. ON is the default because it preserves readability for multi-line text.
Is this reverse text tool free?
Yes. It is 100% free, requires no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser. Your text never leaves your device.
