What Is a Line Break Remover?
A line break remover is a tool that joins multiple lines of text into a single continuous paragraph. It finds every line break and either removes it entirely or replaces it with something else — a space, comma, semicolon or any custom character you choose.
Line breaks are usually harmless. But when you copy text from a PDF, an email, a scanned document or a Word file, you often end up with hard line breaks in the middle of sentences. These breaks wreck the formatting when you paste the text elsewhere. A line break remover fixes this in a single click.
How it works
The tool processes your text in three simple steps:
- Split the text into lines. It handles all three common line-ending formats: Windows (
\r\n), Unix/macOS modern (\n) and classic Mac (\r). - Detect paragraphs (if preserving). Blank lines are treated as paragraph separators and everything else is joined.
- Join the lines within each paragraph using your chosen replacement character — or nothing at all.
Example: before and after
The 6 replacement options
| Option | What It Does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Space | Replaces each line break with a single space. | line1 line2 line3 |
| Nothing | Removes line breaks with no separator. | line1line2line3 |
| Comma | Joins lines with a comma. | line1,line2,line3 |
| Comma + Space | Joins lines with a comma and a space. | line1, line2, line3 |
| Semicolon | Joins lines with a semicolon and space. | line1; line2; line3 |
| Custom | Join with any custom character or string you type. | line1 | line2 | line3 |
Preserving paragraph breaks
The most useful feature for real-world text is Preserve paragraph breaks. Here's why:
- Line break (also called a soft return or newline) moves text to the next line without starting a new paragraph. It's usually a single
\ncharacter. - Paragraph break (or hard return) starts a new paragraph. It's usually two newlines in a row —
\n\n— creating a visible blank line between blocks of text.
When you copy from a PDF or email, line breaks show up mid-sentence where the PDF reader wrapped the text to fit the page. Paragraph breaks separate actual paragraphs. A good line break remover keeps the paragraph breaks and joins the line breaks. That way you get clean, readable paragraphs instead of one giant wall of text.
Common use cases

Options explained
- Preserve paragraph breaks (default ON) — keeps blank lines as paragraph separators. Turn OFF if you want everything joined into a single line.
- Trim each line (default ON) — removes leading and trailing spaces from each line before joining, so you don't get multiple spaces in the middle of the joined output.
- Collapse extra spaces (default ON) — replaces runs of multiple spaces with a single space. Useful when joining lines that already had trailing or leading spaces.
Line endings across operating systems
Different operating systems use different characters to represent line breaks in files:
- Windows: CRLF —
\r\n(carriage return + line feed) - Unix / Linux / modern macOS: LF —
\n(line feed only) - Classic Mac OS (pre-OS X): CR —
\r(carriage return only)
Our tool detects and handles all three automatically, so you can paste text from any source without worrying about the format.
How does it compare to other tools?
- Text editors (VS Code, Notepad++): Can join lines but usually requires a regex like
\n→ " ". Manual, error-prone. - Unix
tr:tr '\n' ' 'joins all lines but loses paragraph breaks and doesn't trim. - Word's Find & Replace: Works but slow and doesn't preserve paragraph breaks cleanly.
- This tool: One-click, preserves paragraphs, trims, collapses spaces, and runs in your browser.
Privacy and security
This line break remover runs entirely in your browser. Your text is never sent to any server, never stored anywhere, and disappears the moment you close the tab. Safe for confidential documents, private notes, legal text and any content you want to keep local.
