What Is Image Flipping?

Image flipping mirrors a picture across a horizontal or vertical axis — like a reflection in a mirror. Unlike rotating, which spins the image around a point, flipping always preserves the image's dimensions and orientation. A landscape photo stays landscape; a portrait stays portrait. Only the direction of the mirror changes.

Flipping is fundamentally different from rotation, and the distinction matters:

Flipping vs rotating — the key difference

OperationWhat changesDimensions
Flip horizontalLeft ↔ right mirroredUnchanged
Flip verticalTop ↔ bottom mirroredUnchanged
Flip bothBoth axes mirrored (equals a 180° rotation)Unchanged
Rotate 90°Image turned sidewaysW and H swapped
Rotate 180°Upside down and left-right reversedUnchanged

The output looks different because flipping preserves the handedness of the image (a left hand still looks like a left hand), while rotation changes it.

The three flip directions

Is flipping lossless?

Yes — completely. Every pixel in the image keeps its exact colour value and just moves to a mirrored position. There's no resampling, no interpolation, no data loss. Flipping an image and then flipping it again on the same axis returns the exact original pixels, byte for byte.

This is why flipping is always safer than arbitrary rotation. Rotation by anything other than a multiple of 90° requires interpolation; flipping never does.

When to use each flip direction

About text and readable content

Flipping makes any text in the image unreadable — mirror text or upside-down text. This is fine for artistic effect or for fixing a pre-mirrored photo, but it's a bad idea for images that contain:

If your image has important text and you need to fix orientation, use Rotate Image instead — it can flip in a way that keeps text readable.

Common use cases

Un-mirror Selfies

Front-facing cameras mirror selfies. Flip horizontally to see yourself as others do.

Match Lighting

Flip horizontally to change which side of the subject is lit.

Reflection Effects

Flip vertically and combine with the original for a water reflection.

Create Symmetry

Flip horizontal next to the original for symmetric designs.

Fix Scans

Correct a scan that came out mirrored due to scanner settings.

Fix Upside-Down

Flip vertically to correct an upside-down photo in one action.

Portrait Improvement

Some faces photograph better from one direction — flip to choose.

Design Mirroring

Create mirrored tiles, patterns and abstract compositions.

Privacy and security

This flip image tool runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image is never uploaded, never stored, and never transmitted to any server. The processing happens on your device, which means the tool works offline once the page has loaded. Safe for private photos, confidential documents and personal images.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I flip an image online?
Upload your image, then click the Horizontal button to mirror it left-to-right, Vertical to flip it top-to-bottom, or Both to apply both mirrors. The preview updates live, and you click Download Flipped Image to save the result.
Does flipping reduce image quality?
No. Flipping is completely lossless — every pixel keeps its exact colour value and simply moves to a mirrored position. The pixel count and image dimensions stay exactly the same.
What's the difference between flipping and rotating?
Flipping mirrors the image across an axis (like a mirror on a wall). Rotating turns the image around its centre point. Flipping horizontal + vertical is not the same as rotating 180° — flipping keeps the image's handedness, while rotation changes it.
What does 'Flip Both' do?
Flipping both applies a horizontal and a vertical mirror, which is equivalent to rotating the image 180°. The result looks upside-down and left-right reversed.
Will my image become sideways when flipped?
No. Flipping never changes the image's aspect ratio or orientation. A landscape photo stays landscape, a portrait stays portrait — only the direction of the mirror changes.
Can I flip text so it's readable?
No. Flipping makes text unreadable — mirrored or upside-down text can't be reversed by flipping alone. If you need text to stay readable, use Rotate Image instead and rotate in 90° steps.
Which image formats are supported?
You can upload JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP files. Output can be saved as PNG (lossless, default), JPEG (smaller) or WebP (modern format).
Does flipping remove EXIF metadata?
Yes. Re-encoding through the Canvas API strips most metadata — including camera model, GPS location and date taken. This is generally a privacy win. The flip is baked into the pixels, so the result displays correctly everywhere.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. All flipping happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image never leaves your device — nothing is uploaded, stored or transmitted.
Is this flip image tool free?
Yes. It is 100% free, requires no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser. There are no watermarks, no file limits and no premium tier.
