About Date Difference
The difference between two dates is one of the most common calculations in everyday life β how many days until a deadline, how long a project ran, how old someone is, or how many working days are left in a sprint. It looks simple, but there are three different answers depending on what you're actually asking.
This calculator gives you all three: the raw day count, a calendar-accurate years/months/days breakdown, and a business-day count that skips weekends.
Three ways to measure a date difference
| Method | What it counts | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Total days | Every calendar day between the two dates | Deadlines, countdowns, project durations |
| Years / months / days | Whole calendar units, borrowing between them | Age, tenancy, subscriptions, milestones |
| Business days | Weekdays only (MonβFri) | Sprint planning, SLA timers, invoicing |
Exclusive vs inclusive counting
By default, this calculator counts the difference exclusive of the end date β the same convention Excel uses with the =DAYS() function and the same one most project managers mean when they say "the project took 14 days."
If you need the end date counted β for example, counting the number of nights at a hotel, where check-in and check-out are both part of the stay β toggle Include end date. The same two dates then produce a result one day longer.
How the years/months/days breakdown works
Naively dividing the day count by 30.44 gives an approximate month figure, but it doesn't match how people actually talk about duration. If someone asks "how long between 15 January 2023 and 10 March 2024?", the answer they want is 1 year, 1 month and 24 days β not "13.8 months".
The calculator walks the calendar properly:
- Take the year difference.
- Take the month difference.
- Take the day difference; if it's negative, borrow the number of days in the previous month and reduce the month by one.
This matches the logic used by age calculators and legal documents, and is the reason it never drifts by more than a day across leap years.
Business days vs calendar days
A calendar day is any day on the calendar, including weekends. A business day (also called a working day) excludes Saturdays and Sundays. A week has 5 business days and 2 weekend days out of 7 calendar days.
Some institutions also exclude public holidays from business days. This calculator does not subtract holidays, because public holidays vary by country, region and year. If you need that, subtract them manually β or use a payroll-specific tool from your provider.
