About Age Calculation
Calculating age looks trivial but is actually one of the more subtle date problems in everyday computing. The issue is that months have different lengths (28, 29, 30 or 31 days) and leap years add a day every four years. Simply dividing total days lived by 365.25 gives a close approximation, but it will be off by a day or more for many birthdates.
The correct method — used by this calculator — works month-by-month and day-by-day from the birthdate. Starting from the day of birth, count forward one month at a time until you can't add another full month without going past the target date, then count the remaining days. This always produces the age that matches what you'd naturally say.
The three standard age measurements
| Measurement | Meaning | Example (born 1 Jan 2000, today 1 Mar 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Chronological age | Complete years lived | 26 years |
| Adjusted age | Years, months and days | 26 years, 2 months, 0 days |
| Total time lived | Days, hours, minutes | ~9,556 days |
How the month-by-month method works
- Start at the birthdate. Add one full year at a time while remaining before the target date. That gives the year count.
- From there, add one full month at a time while remaining before the target date. That gives the month count.
- The remaining days between the last whole-month anniversary and the target date give the day count.
The method handles leap-day birthdays correctly. A person born on 29 February 2000 is considered to turn 1 year old on 28 February 2001 or 1 March 2001 depending on the jurisdiction — this tool treats the age as increasing on 1 March, the more common convention.

Interesting age facts
- Billion seconds — you turn one billion seconds old at about 31 years, 8 months. It is a common "how old are you in seconds?" milestone.
- Million hours — you turn one million hours old at approximately 114 years, which is beyond most human lifespans.
- Double the number — a person born in 1970 is 55–56 years old in 2026. A person born in 2000 is 26–27.
- Born on a leap day? — approximately 1 in 1,461 people worldwide was born on 29 February. That is around 5 million people globally.
- 7 billionth person — the world population reached 7 billion in October 2011 and 8 billion in November 2022.
