Note: This calculator uses the Gregorian calendar and accounts for leap years. Ages are calculated by calendar month and day, not by dividing total days — so your age in years matches what you would tell someone on the street.

About Age Calculation

Calculating age looks trivial but is actually one of the more subtle date problems in everyday computing. The issue is that months have different lengths (28, 29, 30 or 31 days) and leap years add a day every four years. Simply dividing total days lived by 365.25 gives a close approximation, but it will be off by a day or more for many birthdates.

The correct method — used by this calculator — works month-by-month and day-by-day from the birthdate. Starting from the day of birth, count forward one month at a time until you can't add another full month without going past the target date, then count the remaining days. This always produces the age that matches what you'd naturally say.

The three standard age measurements

MeasurementMeaningExample (born 1 Jan 2000, today 1 Mar 2026)
Chronological ageComplete years lived26 years
Adjusted ageYears, months and days26 years, 2 months, 0 days
Total time livedDays, hours, minutes~9,556 days

How the month-by-month method works

  1. Start at the birthdate. Add one full year at a time while remaining before the target date. That gives the year count.
  2. From there, add one full month at a time while remaining before the target date. That gives the month count.
  3. The remaining days between the last whole-month anniversary and the target date give the day count.

The method handles leap-day birthdays correctly. A person born on 29 February 2000 is considered to turn 1 year old on 28 February 2001 or 1 March 2001 depending on the jurisdiction — this tool treats the age as increasing on 1 March, the more common convention.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is age calculated?
Age is calculated by counting full years, then full months, then remaining days from your birthdate to the target date. This is the same method used informally when someone asks "how old are you?" — you don't say "9,556 days old", you say "26 years" or "26 years and 2 months". The tool does this automatically, accounting for leap years and uneven month lengths.
Does it handle leap years correctly?
Yes. If you were born on 29 February, the calculator treats your age as increasing on 1 March in non-leap years. This matches the common legal convention in most countries. If you were born on any other day, the calculation naturally accounts for the extra day in leap years — you do not need to do anything special.
Why is "days lived" not exactly 365 × age?
Because a year is not 365 days — it is 365.2422 days on average. Every four years a leap day is added, which is why your "days lived" number grows slightly faster than 365 per year. Over a 30-year span, that adds up to about 7 leap days, so a 30-year-old has lived roughly 10,957 days, not 10,950.
What is a "billion seconds" milestone?
A billion seconds is about 31 years and 8 months. Many people celebrate it as a milestone because it is a round, memorable number of seconds — but it happens on different calendar days depending on the birthdate and leap-year positions. This calculator shows your total seconds lived so you can see how far you are from (or past) the milestone.
Can I calculate my age on a future date?
Yes. Change the "Calculate age as of" date to any future date and the calculator will tell you how old you will be on that day. This is useful for planning birthdays, checking age requirements for events, or seeing how old you will be at a milestone date like a wedding or graduation.
Why do I need to enter a birth time?
The birth time is optional. If you leave the default (noon), the calculator will give you an accurate day-level age but the hours and minutes count will be based on that assumption. If you know your exact birth time, entering it gives you a precise hours/minutes/seconds figure — useful for trivia or for tracking newborn age in a hospital.
Is this age calculator free?
Yes. It is 100% free, requires no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser. No watermarks, no limits, no premium tier.
Is my birthdate sent to a server?
No. All calculations happen locally in JavaScript. Your birthdate is never transmitted, stored or logged — safe for confidential personal information.
Does it support dates before 1900 or after 2100?
Yes, up to JavaScript's supported range, which covers roughly ±275,000 years from the present. In practice, the calculator works accurately for any realistic human birthdate — from the 1800s to the 2100s and beyond.
Which day of the week was I born on?
The calculator shows this in the "Fun facts" section. The Gregorian calendar has a well-defined cycle (a 400-year cycle contains exactly 146,097 days, which is divisible by 7), so the day of the week for any historical or future date can be computed exactly. The algorithm matches what you would get from any modern calendar.
