What Is a UTM Link?

A UTM link is a URL with special tracking parameters appended to it. When someone clicks a UTM link, Google Analytics and other tools record exactly where that visitor came from — which platform, which campaign and which piece of content they interacted with.

UTM stands for "Urchin Tracking Module," named after the analytics company Google acquired in 2005 to build Google Analytics. Today it's the universal standard for campaign tracking across virtually every analytics platform.

The 5 UTM parameters

Parameter Purpose Example
utm_source Where the traffic comes from — the specific platform. facebook, google, newsletter
utm_medium The category of channel — how the traffic reached you. cpc, email, social, banner
utm_campaign The specific campaign name. Required for grouping. spring-sale-2026
utm_term The paid search keyword (Google Ads). running+shoes
utm_content Differentiates A/B test variants or ad creatives. header-cta-v2

Examples of well-built UTM links

Facebook ad campaign:

https://yoursite.com/sale?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=spring-sale&utm_content=video-ad-v2

Email newsletter:

https://yoursite.com/blog?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=weekly-digest

LinkedIn organic post:

UTM naming conventions that actually work

  1. Always lowercase. Google Analytics is case-sensitive. Facebook and facebook show as two separate sources. This tool lowercases automatically.
  2. Use hyphens, not spaces or underscores. Spaces become %20 in the URL and underscores render as word-joiners in some reports.
  3. Be consistent. Pick a naming scheme and stick to it forever. Every marketer on your team should use the same values for the same channels.
  4. Keep it short. Shorter values are easier to type and read in reports. fb not facebook-ads-campaign-paid.
  5. Document your taxonomy. Maintain a spreadsheet of approved sources, mediums and campaign names so future you doesn't have to remember.

Do UTM links hurt SEO?

External UTM links are perfectly safe. Use them in ads, social posts, email campaigns and paid channels — that's what they're designed for.

Do not use UTM links for internal links on your own site. Each UTM combination creates a new URL that Google treats as a separate page. This causes duplicate content issues in Google's index and can split ranking signals. If you must use UTM links internally, add a canonical tag pointing back to the clean URL.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a UTM link?
A UTM link is a URL with special tracking parameters appended to it. When users click a UTM link, Google Analytics (and other analytics tools) record exactly where that visitor came from — which platform, campaign and content they clicked. UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module, named after the company Google acquired to build Analytics.
What are the 5 UTM parameters?
The 5 standard UTM parameters are: (1) utm_source — where the traffic comes from (facebook, google, newsletter). (2) utm_medium — the type of channel (cpc, email, social, banner). (3) utm_campaign — the specific campaign name. (4) utm_term — paid search keyword (optional). (5) utm_content — A/B test or ad variant identifier (optional).
Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?
Yes, UTM parameter values are case-sensitive in Google Analytics. Facebook, facebook and FACEBOOK will show up as three different sources in your reports. Best practice is to always use lowercase for every UTM value. Our tool lowercases them automatically.
Do UTM links hurt SEO?
UTM links do not hurt SEO directly, but you should never use them for internal links on your own site. Each UTM combination creates a new URL that Google treats as a separate page, which can cause duplicate content issues. Always add a canonical tag pointing to the clean URL. External UTM links (used in ads, social posts, emails) are perfectly safe.
What is the difference between utm_source and utm_medium?
utm_source is the specific platform (facebook, google, newsletter, twitter). utm_medium is the category of channel (social, cpc, email, organic, referral, banner). So a Facebook ad has source=facebook and medium=cpc. A Facebook organic post has source=facebook and medium=social.
Where is my UTM link history stored?
Entirely in your browser using localStorage. Nothing is ever uploaded to a server. If you clear your browser data or use a different device, the history won't carry over.
Is this UTM link builder free?
Yes — 100% free, no sign-up, runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is ever sent to any server.
