What Is a Twitter Card?

A Twitter Card (now officially "X Card") is a rich media preview that appears when a URL is shared on X / Twitter. It shows a title, description, image or video, and sometimes app install info โ€” all controlled by twitter: meta tags in your page's <head>.

Without Twitter Cards, shared links appear as plain text URLs with no preview. With them, links become visually clickable cards that get 2โ€“3ร— more engagement.

Twitter Cards vs Open Graph

Twitter / X reads both twitter: and og: tags. If twitter: tags exist, they take priority. If not, X falls back to Open Graph tags. Best practice: include both so your cards look great everywhere โ€” Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Discord, Slack and X.

How to test your card

  1. Publish your page with the tags in place.
  2. Open a new tweet composer on X and paste your URL โ€” the preview appears automatically.
  3. Or use the Card Validator (still live for diagnostics).
  4. If the preview looks wrong, X may have cached an old version โ€” append ?v=2 to your URL to force a fresh scrape.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Twitter Card?
A Twitter Card is a rich preview that appears when a URL is shared on X / Twitter. It shows a title, description, image, and sometimes video or app info. Twitter Cards are controlled by meta tags in the head of your page.
What is the difference between summary and summary_large_image?
The summary card shows a small square thumbnail to the left of the text. The summary_large_image card shows a full-width hero image above the text. Large image cards get more engagement but take up more space in the timeline.
What size should twitter:image be?
For summary_large_image, use 1200 ร— 630 pixels (aspect ratio 1.91:1). For summary, use a minimum of 144 ร— 144 pixels with a 1:1 ratio. Keep images under 5 MB and use JPG, PNG, WEBP or GIF format.
Do I need both twitter: and og: tags?
Twitter / X falls back to Open Graph tags if twitter: tags are missing. But to control exactly how your card appears on X, include twitter: tags. Including both maximizes compatibility across all social platforms.
How do I test my Twitter Card?
Use the official Card Validator at cards-dev.twitter.com/validator, or simply paste your URL into a draft tweet on X. The preview shows exactly how your card will appear. X caches cards, so you may need to add a query parameter to force a refresh.
Why isn't my card showing up?
The most common causes: (1) missing twitter:card tag, (2) image URL not absolute, (3) image smaller than the minimum size, (4) image blocked by robots.txt, (5) X has cached an old version โ€” append ?v=2 to the URL to force a refresh, or (6) tags inside the body instead of the head.
Is this Twitter Card generator free?
Yes โ€” 100% free, no sign-up, runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is ever uploaded to a server.
