About Time Zone Conversion

Time zones divide the world into regions that share the same local time. They are defined relative to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the global reference clock. A zone's offset from UTC can be a whole number of hours, or a half- or quarter-hour in some regions (India is UTC+5:30, Nepal is UTC+5:45, Chatham Islands are UTC+12:45).

The complication is daylight saving time (DST). Roughly 70 countries shift their clocks forward by an hour during their summer — but not on the same dates, and not always at the same time. The Northern Hemisphere shifts in March and back in November; the Southern Hemisphere does the reverse. A handful of countries switch on different dates each year and others have abolished it entirely.

This tool uses the IANA time zone database (via the browser's Intl.DateTimeFormat API), which contains the authoritative rules for every time zone and their historical DST changes back to the 19th century.

How time zones interact across the globe

The current spread of zones ranges from UTC−12:00 (Baker Island, uninhabited) to UTC+14:00 (Kiritimati, Line Islands). This means there are always between 26 and 27 hours of calendar-date difference happening across the globe at any given moment. When it is Monday in Kiritimati, it is still Sunday in Honolulu.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert a time between two time zones?
Enter the date and time in the source time zone, then pick the target time zone. The tool displays the equivalent moment in the target zone — same instant, different wall-clock reading. This works for any historical or future date, and daylight saving is applied automatically based on the date you entered.
Is this time zone converter free?
Yes. It is 100% free, requires no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged.
How does DST work across hemispheres?
The Northern Hemisphere shifts clocks forward in March and back in November (roughly). The Southern Hemisphere does the reverse: it shifts forward in October and back in April. This tool handles both automatically — if you enter a date in July, US zones are in summer offset and Australia is in winter offset, without you doing anything.
What is UTC?
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the global reference clock from which every other time zone offset is measured. It is not adjusted for daylight saving and never changes. It replaced GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) as the international standard in 1972. Time zones are usually written as UTC+offset, like UTC+5:30 for India.
What is the difference between GMT and UTC?
For everyday purposes, there is no difference — both use the same clock and the same offset from the Prime Meridian. Technically, UTC is a modern atomic-clock standard maintained by an international consortium, while GMT is the older astronomical standard based on the Sun's position at Greenwich. UK websites and businesses often use "GMT" out of tradition, but it means the same thing.
Which time zones are 30 or 45 minutes off?
Several zones use fractional-hour offsets. India uses UTC+5:30 (IST). Nepal uses UTC+5:45. Sri Lanka used UTC+5:30. Iran uses UTC+3:30 (IRST). Myanmar uses UTC+6:30. Newfoundland in Canada uses UTC−3:30. South Australia uses UTC+9:30. All are supported automatically by this tool.
What is the IANA time zone database?
The IANA time zone database (also called tzdata or the Olson database) is the authoritative reference for every time zone in the world and its historical changes. It contains records going back to the 1800s. Your browser ships with a version of this database through the operating system, which is why this tool can correctly handle any historical date — even ones before DST existed.
Is my input sent to a server?
No. All conversions happen locally in JavaScript using the browser's native Intl APIs. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged.
Why does my city not appear in the list?
The list shows the IANA time zone names, which are usually named after a representative city. If your city is not listed, pick the nearest larger city in the same time zone — for example, "Europe/Amsterdam" for the Netherlands, "Asia/Kolkata" for all of India, or "America/Los_Angeles" for the entire US Pacific coast.
Can I convert a time for a future date?
Yes. Enter any future date and the tool applies the time zone rules that will be in effect at that date. Note that countries occasionally change their DST laws (the EU has debated abolishing it), so very distant future dates may not be perfectly accurate. The browser uses the most recent rules it has.
