What Is Speech to Text?

Speech to text — also called voice to text, dictation or voice typing — converts spoken words into written text. A microphone captures your voice, a speech recognition engine identifies the words, and the result appears on screen as text you can copy, edit or save.

This tool uses the browser's native Web Speech API. That means no account, no API key and no audio ever passing through XToolBoost's servers. Everything runs through your own browser.

Browser support

Unlike most of our tools, speech recognition depends on the browser vendor rather than on XToolBoost. Here's the current state of the art:

BrowserSupportNotes
Chrome (desktop)✅ FullBest accuracy. Sends audio to Google for transcription.
Edge (desktop)✅ FullUses Microsoft's engine. Good accuracy.
Safari (macOS)✅ FullUses Apple's engine. May stop after short silences.
Chrome (Android)✅ FullWorks well. Keyboard mic button competes with this tool.
Safari (iOS)✅ FullStops after ~5 seconds of silence — speak continuously.
Firefox❌ NoneFirefox has not implemented SpeechRecognition.
Opera⚠️ PartialBased on Chromium but often lacks the speech backend.

How the recognition works

Interim vs final results

As you speak, the engine produces two kinds of results:

Interim results make the tool feel responsive, but they can shift mid-sentence. If you turn off "Show live text", only final results appear — less flicker, but more latency.

Continuous mode

When Continuous is on, the tool keeps listening until you press the mic button again. Browsers normally stop after a few seconds of silence to save resources — our tool automatically restarts recognition on `onend` when continuous mode is enabled, so you can dictate long passages without interruption.

Automatic punctuation

Modern engines add commas, periods and question marks as you speak, based on intonation and pauses. You can also spell punctuation out loud:

Tips for better accuracy

Common use cases

Writing & Drafting

Dictate essays, emails, blog posts and reports — often faster than typing.

Interview Transcripts

Transcribe interviews and conversations in real time with automatic punctuation.

Students & Note-Taking

Capture lectures, study notes and ideas while your hands are busy.

Accessibility

Type without a keyboard — helpful for RSI, mobility issues or dyslexia.

Language Practice

Speak in a foreign language and see how accurately you're recognised.

Meeting Notes

Dictate action items and summaries straight into a text file.

Mobile Typing Alternative

Faster than tapping on a phone keyboard for longer messages.

Podcast & Video Notes

Play audio nearby and transcribe it into text for show notes.

Speech to text vs voice typing vs dictation

These three terms all describe the same underlying technology, but the context differs:

They all do the same thing — the terminology is largely interchangeable.

Privacy and security

XToolBoost does not record, store or transmit your audio. The microphone stream is handled directly by your browser's speech recognition engine and never touches our servers.

However, it's important to be honest about how browser speech recognition works: Chrome, Edge and Safari may send your audio to their vendor's servers (Google, Microsoft and Apple respectively) to perform the transcription. This happens between your browser and the vendor — XToolBoost is not involved and cannot see or intercept your audio.

For highly confidential content, check your browser's privacy documentation, or use a locally-installed dictation tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is speech to text?
Speech to text (also called voice to text, dictation or voice typing) converts spoken words into written text using a microphone and speech recognition engine. It's used for writing hands-free, transcribing interviews, taking notes and accessibility.
Which browsers support speech to text?
Chrome, Edge and Safari support the Web Speech API speech recognition interface. Firefox does not currently support it. For the best experience use desktop Chrome or Edge. On mobile, Chrome on Android and Safari on iOS both work.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. Chrome on Android and Safari on iOS both support speech recognition. On iOS the microphone may stop after a short period of silence, so speak continuously for the best results. Our continuous mode automatically restarts recognition to help with this.
Does it add punctuation automatically?
Yes, modern browsers add commas, periods and question marks automatically. You can also speak punctuation out loud — say "comma", "period", "question mark" or "new line" and the engine will insert the symbol.
Can I dictate in another language?
Yes. Choose from over 30 languages in the language dropdown, including English (US, UK, Australia, India), Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Hindi, Arabic and more. Accuracy varies by language and accent.
Is my audio recorded or stored?
XToolBoost does not record, store or transmit your audio. However, your browser's built-in speech recognition may send audio to its vendor's servers to perform the transcription — this happens between your browser and the vendor, not through XToolBoost. For sensitive content, check your browser's privacy documentation.
Why does it stop listening after a few seconds?
Browsers stop listening automatically after a few seconds of silence to save resources. Our tool restarts the recognition automatically when this happens (if continuous mode is on), so you can keep dictating. If it stops unexpectedly, just click the microphone button again.
Why is the transcript sometimes wrong?
Speech recognition accuracy depends on your microphone quality, background noise, accent, speaking pace and the language you chose. For better results: use a headset mic, reduce background noise, speak clearly at a steady pace, and make sure the language matches your speech. You can always edit the transcript after copying it.
Is this speech to text tool free?
Yes. It is 100% free, requires no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser using the native Web Speech API.
