What Is Reverse Text?
Reverse text means flipping the order of characters, words or lines so they read backwards. It's a fun word puzzle, a useful programming aid, and a creative tool for content creators. Different reverse modes work for different purposes:
- Flipping the order of every character produces mirror text — "Hello" becomes "olleH".
- Flipping the order of words keeps words intact — "Hello world" becomes "world Hello".
- Flipping the order of lines changes document structure — the last line becomes the first.
The 6 reverse modes
| Mode | What It Does | Example Result |
|---|---|---|
| Reverse characters | Flips every letter, digit and punctuation in the whole text. | Hello world → dlrow olleH |
| Reverse words | Keeps each word intact, but reverses the order of words. | the cat sat → sat cat the |
| Reverse lines | Keeps each line intact, but reverses the order of lines. | line1\nline2 → line2\nline1 |
| Flip each word | Reverses the letters inside each word, keeping word order. | the cat → eht tac |
| Reverse word order per line | Reverses word order within each line, keeps line order. | the cat\nsat down → cat the\ndown sat |
| Full mirror | Reverses characters AND line order — a complete flip. | abc\ndef → fed\ncba |
Example: "Hello world"
Options explained
- Preserve spacing (default ON) — when reversing characters, keeps multiple spaces as multiple spaces. Off makes all spacing collapse. Useful for preserving text that has intentional alignment.
- Preserve line count (default ON) — when reversing characters, treats each line as a separate unit so lines stay on their own rows. Off reverses the entire text as one continuous string, which pushes words from the end of the last line to the start of the first line.
- Trim whitespace — removes leading and trailing spaces from each line before processing. Off preserves all original spacing.
Reverse text and palindromes
A palindrome is a word, phrase or number that reads the same forwards and backwards. Palindromes are reverse text's most famous application — try reversing "racecar", "madam", "level" or "A man a plan a canal panama" and you get the exact same text back.
Try our Palindrome Checker if you want to quickly test any word or phrase for palindrome-ness, with letter-by-letter comparison.
Unicode and emoji handling
Our reverse tool uses code-point-aware iteration, so emoji (😀, 🎉, ❤️) and non-Latin scripts (Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, Japanese, Korean) are treated as single units rather than being broken into random bytes. Try reversing "Hello 👋 world 🌍" and you get "🌍 dlrow 👋 olleH" — the emoji stay intact.
Some complex multi-codepoint emoji (flags, family emoji with zero-width joiners, skin-tone modifiers) may render unexpectedly when reversed, because their visual structure depends on the order of combining characters. This is a Unicode limitation, not a tool limitation.

Reverse text vs mirror text vs upside-down text
These three text effects are often confused:
- Reverse text (this tool) — flips character order. "ABC" becomes "CBA".
- Mirror text — flips each character left-to-right visually using special Unicode mirror characters (like
ᗺ,ᖷ). The visual effect is a horizontally flipped word, but the underlying characters are different. - Upside-down text — flips the entire text 180° using special Unicode characters (like
¿,ʇ). Produces "ǝlqɐʇ" for "table".
