About Random Picker Wheels

A random picker wheel — sometimes called a spin wheel, decision wheel or prize wheel — is a circular graphic divided into coloured segments, each labelled with an entry. Spin it, and it slows down and stops with a pointer on one segment: the winner. It is the most visual form of random selection, and that visibility is exactly what makes it useful for public draws, classroom activities, giveaways and settling disputes.

This tool builds a fair wheel entirely in your browser. Every entry has an equal chance of being selected, the animation is purely cosmetic, and no data leaves your device.

How the spin works

Every spin does three things:

Because the final angle is generated before the animation starts, the spin is fair regardless of how the wheel decelerates. The animation is a display of the outcome, not a cause of it.

Equal vs weighted segments

In this tool every entry gets an equal-sized segment. With N entries, each has a 1/N chance of winning. For a 6-entry wheel that is 16.67% each; for a 50-entry wheel it is 2% each.

Weighted wheels, where some segments are larger than others, give different probabilities. They are useful for raffles where some people bought more tickets, or for handicapping games. If you need weighted probability, combine the wheel with our Random Number Generator — roll a number 1–100 and map ranges to entries.

Remove-winner mode

By default, the wheel keeps every entry after a spin — the same entry can win again. This is called sampling with replacement, and it matches what you expect from a real physical prize wheel.

Turn on Remove winner after spin for sampling without replacement: each winner is removed from the wheel so that subsequent spins pick from the remaining entries. This is the right mode for:

When you have drawn all entries, the wheel empties. Add entries again or turn the mode off to continue.

This random picker wheel runs entirely in your browser. Every spin uses Math.random() locally, and your entries and winner history are stored only in your browser's localStorage. Nothing is transmitted, stored or logged on any server.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a random picker wheel?
A random picker wheel is a spinning wheel divided into coloured segments, each labelled with an entry. When you spin it, the wheel slows down and stops with the pointer on one segment — the winner. It is used for giveaways, decision-making, classroom activities, team picking, games and any situation where you need a fair, visible random selection.
Is the spin truly random?
Yes. The final landing angle is generated using the browser's Math.random() function, giving every entry an equal probability of winning. The animation is deterministic — the wheel stops exactly where the random number tells it to. The visual slowdown at the end is cosmetic and does not affect fairness.
What is the difference between equal and weighted segments?
Equal segments give every entry the same chance of winning — a 12-entry wheel has a 1-in-12 chance for each. Weighted segments give different entries different slice sizes, so entries with larger weights take up more of the wheel and are more likely to win. Weights are useful for raffles where some people bought more tickets, or for handicapping games.
What does the remove-winner mode do?
With remove-winner mode enabled, the winning entry is taken off the wheel after each spin. This is called drawing without replacement and is the standard pattern for picking multiple distinct winners from a list — a raffle draw, a classroom call on each student once, or a sequence of prizes. Turn it off for independent draws where the same entry can win multiple times.
How many entries can I add?
Between 2 and 50 entries. Below 2 the wheel cannot show a meaningful spin, and above 50 the segments become too thin for labels to be readable. If you need to pick from a longer list, either combine related entries or use our Random Number Generator to pick an index and then look up the corresponding item.
Does the wheel work on mobile?
Yes. The wheel is fully responsive and touch-friendly. Tap the wheel or the Spin button to start a spin. Big screen mode works on mobile too, in landscape orientation, which is useful for picking a winner at a table or on the go.
Can I use the wheel for a business giveaway?
Yes. The wheel is a fair, transparent randomisation method — spin it live on a stream or record the screen so your audience can see the outcome. Combine it with a list of eligible entries and remove-winner mode to draw multiple distinct winners. Ensure you comply with local laws around giveaways, lotteries and contests in your jurisdiction.
Is my data sent to a server?
No. Everything happens locally in your browser. Your entries, spin history and settings are stored only in your device's localStorage and are never transmitted. Clearing your browser data resets everything.
