About Countdown Timers

A countdown timer counts down from a set duration to zero. Where a stopwatch measures how long something takes, a countdown tells you when a fixed period has elapsed. They are used for cooking, exams, presentations, workouts, meetings, meditation, focus sessions and any situation where a specific amount of time needs to pass.

This tool is designed for one job β€” setting a duration and starting a countdown β€” and does it well. It supports custom durations, quick presets, shareable URLs, wake lock, an alarm that loops until dismissed, and a big screen mode for projecting a timer onto a wall or TV.

How it works

The countdown uses performance.now() to compute remaining time from a start timestamp, so it stays accurate even when the browser throttles background tabs. The display updates every animation frame for a smooth, precise countdown.

Colour-coded urgency

The display shifts colour as time runs out, so you can see urgency at a glance without reading the numbers:

Time remainingColourMeaning
NormalGreenPlenty of time left
Under 60 sAmberWrap up β€” nearly done
Under 10 sRedFinal seconds
FinishedFlashing redTime is up

Big screen mode

Big screen mode hides the header, footer, ads and configuration panels, then puts the page in fullscreen with a giant timer display. It is designed for projecting a timer onto a classroom board, event screen or wall-mounted TV. The display scales to fill the whole screen and keeps the timer name, status and progress bar visible.

Trigger it with the expand button in the top-right of the timer stage, or press F. Exit with Esc or the exit button.

Wake lock

Long timers running on a phone or laptop will usually be interrupted by the screen dimming and locking. Wake lock is a browser API that keeps the screen on. Enable it with the lightbulb button before starting β€” the icon fills in when the lock is active.

Wake lock is supported in Chrome, Edge, Safari and most modern mobile browsers. On unsupported browsers the button shows a brief toast explaining that the feature is unavailable.

Shareable URLs

Every countdown timer has a URL. Copy it from the Share card, or build your own with these parameters:

ParameterMeaningExample
?t=5mDuration as a short string (h/m/s)countdown-timer.html?t=5m
?h=1&m=30Hours and minutes separatelycountdown-timer.html?h=1&m=30
?s=90Total seconds onlycountdown-timer.html?s=90
&name=ExamPre-fill the timer name...?t=45m&name=Exam
&auto=1Start counting down immediately...?t=5m&auto=1

Auto-start is useful for QR codes on tables or classroom screens β€” scan and the timer begins counting down without anyone needing to press a button.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use this countdown timer?
Enter the duration using the preset buttons or the custom hours/minutes/seconds inputs, then press Start. The countdown begins immediately and shows hours, minutes and seconds remaining. When it reaches zero, a looping alarm plays until you dismiss it.
Can I share a countdown via URL?
Yes. The tool reads duration from query parameters. Add ?t=5m for five minutes, or ?h=1&m=30 for ninety minutes. When someone opens that URL, the timer is pre-loaded with those values. You can copy the current timer's URL with the Copy button in the Share card.
What is big screen mode?
Big screen mode hides everything except the countdown display and puts the page in fullscreen. It is designed for projecting a timer onto a wall, TV or classroom board during exams, events or workshops. Press Esc or click the exit button to return to normal view.
Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?
Yes. The countdown is calculated from a start timestamp using performance.now() rather than incremented every second, so it stays accurate even when the tab is backgrounded and browser throttling kicks in. When you return, the display catches up instantly.
Will the alarm sound play if the tab is in the background?
Yes, as long as the browser keeps the page running. Modern browsers allow audio playback from a background tab if the page has already received user interaction (starting the timer counts as one). The tab title also changes to "⏰ TIME'S UP!" so you can see it from anywhere.
What is wake lock and why does it matter?
Wake lock is a browser API that prevents your phone or laptop screen from dimming or sleeping during a long countdown. Enable it in the timer stage header when you want the timer to stay visible without touching the device. Support is best in Chrome, Edge and Safari.
What do the colour changes mean?
The display shifts from green to amber when 60 seconds remain, and to red when only 10 seconds remain. This gives an instant visual cue of urgency β€” useful when you are watching the timer out of the corner of your eye rather than reading the numbers.
Is this countdown timer free?
Yes, it is 100% free, requires no sign-up and runs entirely in your browser. No length limits, no watermarks, no premium tier.
