About Random Colours

A random colour generator produces an arbitrary colour each time you generate, without any input from you. Random colours are useful when you need visual variety — placeholder images, data visualisation test data, UI mockups, game elements, generative art or just design inspiration when you don't know where to start.

This generator uses the browser's Math.random() function to pick a value for each RGB channel, giving over 16.7 million equally likely colours in Full mode. The other modes constrain the range to produce colours that feel a certain way — bright, pastel, dark, warm or cool — because truly uniform randomness often produces muddy, mid-tone colours that don't look interesting on their own.

When to lock a colour

Random generation is best when it produces variety, but sometimes you find a colour you love and want to explore variations around it. Locking a colour keeps it fixed while you keep shuffling, so you can see how other random colours sit against it — useful for testing contrast, finding complementary accents or building a palette around an existing brand colour.

This random colour generator runs entirely in your browser. All generation happens locally in JavaScript with the browser's built-in random number generator. Nothing is transmitted, stored or logged on any server.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a random colour generator?
A random colour generator produces an arbitrary colour each time you press the generate button (or the spacebar). It is used for design inspiration, testing UI with unpredictable data, generating placeholder colours and picking colours for games or creative projects.
How is the random colour chosen?
Each red, green and blue channel is set to a random integer from 0 to 255 using the browser's Math.random() function, giving over 16 million equally likely colours. Some modes (like bright or pastel) constrain the range to produce only colours that fit a particular feel.
What does the Spacebar do?
Pressing the spacebar generates a new random colour instantly — no need to click. Press L to lock the current colour so it stays while you keep shuffling, and C to copy the current HEX.
What are the colour modes?
Full gives completely random RGB values. Bright keeps at least one channel high for a vivid result. Pastel uses high lightness and low-to-medium saturation. Dark uses low lightness. Warm and cool bias the hue toward reds/oranges or blues/greens respectively.
Can I generate multiple random colours at once?
Yes. Switch to Palette mode and click Generate to create five random colours at once, shown as a strip you can click to copy individually or all together as a list.
Is my data sent to a server?
No. All generation happens locally in JavaScript using the browser's random number generator. Nothing is transmitted, stored or logged on any server.
Is this random colour generator free?
Yes, it is 100% free, requires no sign-up and runs entirely in your browser. No length limits, no watermarks, no premium tier.
Can I use generated colours commercially?
Yes. Random colours are not copyrightable and you can use any generated colour freely in personal, educational or commercial projects with no attribution required.
