About This Colour Picker

A colour picker is the bridge between the colour you see in your head and the numbers your code needs. Every colour on screen is made of three channels — red, green and blue — and every design tool, code editor and stylesheet expects that colour in a specific format. This picker gives you all of the common ones at once, plus the extras designers reach for every day: harmonies, tints, shades and accessibility checks.

Everything runs in your browser. No files, no uploads, no tracking.

The five colour formats

HSLhsl(221, 83%, 53%)CSS, design systems
HSV / HSBhsv(221, 84%, 92%)Design tools (Photoshop, Figma)

Why HSL is easier than RGB

RGB describes a colour by how much red, green and blue light it emits — which is how screens work, but not how humans think. Want a slightly lighter version of a blue? In RGB you'd have to raise all three channels carefully, keeping the hue intact. In HSL you just move the L slider up.

Colour harmonies explained

A harmony is a set of colours chosen from specific positions on the colour wheel so they naturally look good together. The five classics:

HarmonyRuleBest for
ComplementaryOpposite on the wheel (180°)High-contrast CTA buttons, badges
AnalogousNeighbours (±30°)Calm, cohesive palettes, gradients
TriadicEvenly spaced thirds (120°)Playful, balanced multi-colour designs
Split-complementary180° ±30°Softer alternative to complementary
TetradicRectangle: 0°, 60°, 180°, 240°Rich, varied palettes

Tints and shades

A tint is your colour mixed with white — lighter and softer. A shade is your colour mixed with black — darker and richer. Together they form the "ramp" that design systems use for hover states, borders, backgrounds and text. A typical design system has 9 or 10 steps from near-white to near-black, all derived from a single brand hue.

WCAG contrast and accessibility

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) specify minimum contrast ratios between text and its background so that content stays readable for people with low vision or colour blindness:

The ratio runs from 1:1 (no contrast, e.g. grey on grey) to 21:1 (black on white). The picker shows both white text on your colour and black text on your colour, with AA/AAA badges so you can see instantly whether a design is accessible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a colour picker?
A colour picker is a tool that lets you choose a colour visually and returns its value in formats like HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV and CMYK. Designers use it to match brand colours, find the exact hex code of a shade, or generate a palette from a single starting colour.
What is the difference between HEX, RGB and HSL?
HEX, RGB and HSL all describe the same colour in different ways. HEX is a six-digit hexadecimal code used in HTML and CSS. RGB describes a colour by its red, green and blue channel intensities (0–255). HSL describes a colour by hue (0–360°), saturation (0–100%) and lightness (0–100%), which is more intuitive for adjusting colours by hand.
What is a colour harmony?
A colour harmony is a set of colours that look good together, derived from the colour wheel. Common harmonies include complementary (opposite on the wheel), analogous (neighbours), triadic (evenly spaced thirds), split-complementary and tetradic. This tool generates all five from your chosen colour.
What is WCAG contrast ratio?
WCAG contrast ratio measures how readable text will be on a background colour, on a scale from 1:1 (no contrast) to 21:1 (black on white). The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines require at least 4.5:1 for normal text (AA) and 7:1 for enhanced readability (AAA). This tool shows the ratio against both white and black text.
What are tints and shades?
A tint is a colour mixed with white, which makes it lighter. A shade is a colour mixed with black, which makes it darker. Designers use tints and shades of a single hue to build a cohesive palette that feels like one colour family.
Can I pick a colour from an image?
This tool picks colours from the colour wheel, sliders or a hex code. To pick a colour from a photo or screenshot, use the Image Colour Picker tool, which lets you sample pixels from an uploaded image.
Is this colour picker free?
Yes, it is 100% free, requires no sign-up and runs entirely in your browser. No length limits, no watermarks, no premium tier.
Is my data sent to a server?
No. All colour calculations happen locally in JavaScript. The colours you pick are never transmitted, stored or logged.
