What Is Open Graph?
Open Graph (OG) is a protocol created by Facebook in 2010 that standardises how web pages describe themselves to social platforms. When someone shares a link on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Discord or Slack, the platform reads your og: meta tags and builds a preview card — image, title, description, URL.
Without Open Graph tags, these platforms have to guess. They might pick a random image from your page, use your <title> tag as the heading, or show nothing at all. With them, you control exactly what the card looks like.
The 4 essential og: tags
og:title— the headline of the card. Aim for 55–70 characters.og:description— the summary text. Aim for 110–160 characters.og:image— the picture. Must be 1200×630 px, absolute URL, under 5 MB.og:url— the canonical URL for the page.
Facebook requires all four. Without any one of them, your card will look broken or won't render at all.
The 4 recommended og: tags
og:type—website, article, product, video.movie, etc. Defaults towebsite.og:site_name— your brand name, shown below the domain in some clients.og:locale— language + region, e.g.en_US.og:image:alt— alt text for accessibility (screen readers, etc.).
The image is everything
Studies consistently show that social posts with images get 2–3× more engagement than posts without. The image is the single most important part of your og: card — it's what people see first and what makes them decide to click.
Image specs that work everywhere:
- Size: 1200 × 630 pixels (aspect ratio 1.91:1)
- Format: JPG for photos, PNG for graphics with text
- Weight: under 5 MB (Facebook allows 8 MB, LinkedIn 5 MB)
- Text overlay: keep under 20% of the image
- Safe area: leave 60 px padding on all sides — some platforms crop slightly
- URL: must be absolute (
https://…), not relative (/image.jpg)
How to test your og: tags
- Publish your page with the tags in place.
- Go to the Facebook Sharing Debugger and paste your URL.
- If you see warnings or the wrong image, fix and click "Scrape Again".
- Repeat for LinkedIn Post Inspector.
- Test on WhatsApp by sending the link to yourself and checking the preview.
Common og: tag mistakes
- Relative image URLs.
/image.jpgworks for browsers but breaks social previews. Always usehttps://yoursite.com/image.jpg. - Small images. Images smaller than 200×200 px are ignored by Facebook. Use 1200×630.
- Image blocked by robots.txt. Facebook's crawler respects robots.txt. Make sure your og:image is accessible.
- Tags in the wrong place. og: tags must be inside
<head>, not in the body. - Using twitter: instead of og:. Twitter Cards only work on X. Facebook and LinkedIn read og: tags. Include both for full compatibility.
- Duplicate og: tags. If two plugins output og:title, Facebook may use either. Keep only one set.
- Forgetting to re-scrape. After fixing tags, you must force Facebook to re-crawl by clicking "Scrape Again" in the Debugger.
