About Colour Palettes

A colour palette is a small set of colours chosen to work together across a design. Good palettes create visual harmony by deriving every colour from a small number of hues on the colour wheel, varying lightness and saturation instead of jumping randomly between unrelated colours. This is why brand systems, UI themes and editorial designs almost always start with one or two anchor colours and generate everything else from them.

This generator does that derivation for you. Give it a base colour and a harmony mode, and it produces a five-swatch palette with the right relationships already in place — ready to export as CSS variables, Tailwind config, SCSS, JSON or a plain hex list.

The six harmony modes

ModeRuleBest for
AnalogousHues ±30° from the baseCalm, cohesive, sophisticated palettes
MonochromaticOne hue, varying L and SClean, minimal, brand-consistent systems
ComplementaryBase + 180° oppositeStrong contrast, CTA buttons, badges
Split-complementaryBase + 150° + 210°Softer version of complementary
TriadicThree hues 120° apartPlayful, balanced multi-accent designs
TetradicFour hues 90° apartRich palettes with lots of variety

Why HSL makes palettes easier

Designers generate palettes in HSL, not RGB, because HSL separates the three things you actually want to control independently:

In RGB you would have to adjust all three channels at once to keep a palette harmonious. In HSL you change one number and everything stays in key.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a colour palette generator?
A colour palette generator builds a set of colours that look good together, derived from a single base colour using the colour wheel. Designers use palettes to define brand colours, UI themes, marketing materials and website schemes without having to hand-pick every colour.
What are the six harmony modes?
Analogous uses neighbouring hues for a calm feel. Monochromatic varies lightness and saturation of one hue. Complementary pairs the base with its opposite. Split-complementary uses two colours either side of the complement. Triadic uses three evenly spaced hues. Tetradic uses four hues in a rectangle pattern.
What does the lock button do?
Locking a swatch keeps that colour in place when you shuffle or regenerate the palette. This is useful when you have a brand colour you want to keep and need the rest of the palette to fit around it. Unlock it (or click Unlock all) to let it change again.
How do I save or export a palette?
The Export panel on the right offers five formats: CSS custom properties (variables), Tailwind config, SCSS variables, JSON, and a plain hex list. Click any format and use the copy button to paste into your project.
Can I use the generated palettes commercially?
Yes. Colour itself is not copyrightable and the palettes this tool generates are yours to use freely for personal, educational or commercial projects. No attribution required.
What is the difference between HSL and HSV?
Both describe colours with hue, saturation and a lightness-like third component. In HSL, lightness 100% is pure white and 50% is the pure hue. In HSV, value 100% means full brightness and 0% means black. HSL is more intuitive for choosing colours; HSV is what design tools like Photoshop expose.
Is this colour palette generator free?
Yes, it is 100% free, requires no sign-up and runs entirely in your browser. No length limits, no watermarks, no premium tier.
Is my data sent to a server?
No. All palette generation happens locally in JavaScript. The colours you pick are never transmitted, stored or logged.
