What Is Circle Cropping?
Circle cropping turns a rectangular photo into a circular image by selecting a round region and discarding everything outside it. Unlike a square crop (which keeps four corners), a circle crop produces a round image — the standard shape for profile pictures on every major social platform.
Most platforms display avatars in circles, which means if you upload a square photo, they crop it themselves — often cutting off the top of your head or your ears. Cropping to a circle yourself puts you in control of what stays visible.
Where circle images are used
| Platform | Typical size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 320×320 | Displays at 110×110, but stores a larger image | |
| 500×500 | Compressed heavily by WhatsApp | |
| 400×400 | Larger images compressed automatically | |
| Twitter / X | 400×400 | Max 2 MB; PNG or JPG |
| 320×320 | Displays at 176×176 | |
| Discord | 128×128 | Smaller, optimised for chat display |
| Gmail / Google | 512×512 | Works across Google services |
| Slack | 512×512 | Also used for emoji-style avatars |
400×400 is the safe universal size — it works well across every major platform and is small enough to load instantly.
Background: transparent vs solid colour
When you crop to a circle, the four corners of the square canvas are empty. You have two options:
- Transparent (PNG only). The corners are truly invisible. When the platform displays the image on any background, your photo blends in seamlessly. Best for websites and most modern platforms.
- Solid colour (JPEG or PNG). The corners are filled with a colour you choose. If the platform can't handle transparency (some older systems), or you know the exact background colour, this gives a predictable result.
Transparent PNG is the safest choice — the image looks correct on light backgrounds, dark backgrounds, and platforms that overlay their own gradient behind avatars.
Why add a border?
A thin border (usually 2–6 pixels) creates visual separation between your photo and the platform's background. This is especially helpful when:
- Your photo has a light or white background and gets lost on a white page.
- Your photo has a dark background and gets lost on a dark-mode interface.
- You want to match your brand colour.
- You're creating a consistent look across a team or community.
White, black, brand colours and thin accent colours are the most popular choices.
Common mistakes when circle cropping
- Cropping too tight. The circle crops the corners of a square — faces that look centred in the source photo may end up touching the circle edge. Leave headroom.
- Using a low-resolution source. If you upload a 100×100 image and export at 400×400, the result will be blurry. Start with a source larger than your target output.
- Choosing JPEG with a white background for a dark-mode site. The white corners become visible on dark backgrounds. Use transparent PNG instead.
- Forgetting the top of the head. The circle is smaller than the square that contains it — a face centred in a square often loses the top of the head. Reposition the circle higher than you think you need to.
