Why Use a Word Counter?

A word counter does more than just count — it gives you actionable data for writing, editing and SEO. Whether you're a blogger, student, novelist or marketer, keeping track of your text metrics helps you write better and rank higher.

What this tool counts

How long should your content be?

Content Type Ideal Word Count
Tweet / X post Under 280 characters (about 40–50 words)
Meta description 155–160 characters (25–30 words)
LinkedIn post 1,300 characters (~200 words) for full display
Product description 150–300 words
Blog post (short-form) 600–1,000 words
Blog post (standard) 1,200–1,800 words
Blog post (long-form / pillar) 2,000–4,000 words
Pillar page / skyscraper 3,000–6,000 words
News article 400–800 words
Short story 1,000–7,500 words
Novella 17,500–40,000 words
Novel 70,000–120,000 words

Reading time formula

We calculate reading time using the widely accepted average speed of 200 words per minute:

reading time = words ÷ 200

For speaking time (presentations, videos, podcasts), the average is 130 words per minute:

speaking time = words ÷ 130

This matters for scripts, video narration, podcast intros and any spoken-word content where timing is critical.

Why word count matters for SEO

Important: Longer does not automatically mean better. A 500-word post that answers a question perfectly beats a 3,000-word post that rambles. Match your length to the search intent.

Common use cases

Privacy and security

This word counter runs entirely in your browser. Your text is never sent to any server, never stored anywhere, and disappears the moment you close the tab. It's safe to paste confidential documents, unreleased content, sensitive legal text or private client work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a word counter work?
A word counter splits text on whitespace (spaces, tabs, line breaks) and counts the resulting tokens. Numbers, hyphenated words and contractions (like don't) typically count as one word. Our counter also tracks characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and reading time.
How many words should a blog post be?
The average top-ranking blog post is 1,400–2,000 words. Long-form content (2,000+) tends to rank better in competitive niches and earns more backlinks. Short posts (300–600 words) can still work for news, product descriptions or simple how-tos.
What is the ideal word count for SEO?
There is no single "right" length — the ideal depends on the topic and the search intent. Match the average length of the top 10 results for your target keyword. Google ranks the best answer to the query, not the longest.
How is reading time calculated?
We use 200 words per minute — a widely accepted average for adult reading speed on screens. Speaking time is calculated at 130 words per minute, the average speech pace for presentations and videos.
Do numbers count as words?
Yes, numbers count as words. In most word counters, 2026 or 190+ each count as one word. This matches how Microsoft Word, Google Docs and other tools count.
What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?
Characters without spaces counts every letter, number and punctuation mark. Characters with spaces adds spaces between words. Twitter / X uses the count WITH spaces (280 total). Meta descriptions use the count WITH spaces (155–160 target).
Is this word counter free?
Yes. It is 100% free, requires no sign-up, and works entirely in your browser. Your text never leaves your device.
