What Is Page Speed?

Page speed is how fast a web page loads and becomes usable for visitors. It's measured in real time by Google's PageSpeed Insights API, which runs a synthetic Lighthouse audit and combines it with real-world data from the Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX).

Since 2021, Core Web Vitals have been a Google ranking signal. Speed is not a trump card — relevance wins first — but faster pages consistently rank better in tied situations, convert better and reduce bounce rate.

The 3 Core Web Vitals

Metric What it measures Good target
LCP Largest Contentful Paint — how fast the biggest element (usually hero image or heading) becomes visible. < 2.5 s
INP Interaction to Next Paint — how fast the page responds to clicks, taps and key presses. < 200 ms
CLS Cumulative Layout Shift — how much visible content jumps around while loading. < 0.1

What the 4 Lighthouse scores mean

What's a good PageSpeed score?

For SEO, aim for at least 90 on mobile. Mobile scores are always lower than desktop because Google simulates a mid-tier phone with 4G and 4× CPU throttling. Desktop uses a fast connection with no throttle.

Why mobile scores are lower

Lighthouse uses different throttling presets:

A 90 on mobile typically means near-perfect performance on actual devices. A 90 on desktop is a lower bar.

Common speed problems & fixes

  1. Unoptimised images. Convert to WebP, compress, and use responsive srcset. This is the single most common fix.
  2. Render-blocking resources. Inline critical CSS, defer non-critical JS, use font-display: swap.
  3. Too much JavaScript. Code-split, tree-shake, remove unused libraries. JS is the #1 cause of poor INP.
  4. No text compression. Enable Brotli or gzip on your server — instant 70% reduction in HTML/CSS/JS size.
  5. No caching. Set long Cache-Control headers on static assets.
  6. Slow server response. Improve TTFB with a CDN, HTTP/3, or a faster host.
  7. Layout shift from ads and embeds. Reserve space with width and height attributes or CSS aspect-ratio.
  8. Too many third-party scripts. Analytics, chat widgets, ads, A/B tools — each adds hundreds of KB and main-thread work.

Lab data vs field data

PageSpeed Insights shows two types of data:

If your field data shows a worse score than your lab data, real users on slower devices are struggling. If field data is missing entirely, your page may not have enough traffic to be included in CrUX yet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PageSpeed Insights?
PageSpeed Insights (PSI) is Google's free tool that analyses a URL and generates a Lighthouse performance report. It returns two types of data: lab data from a synthetic test run in a controlled environment, and field data from real Chrome users via the Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX).
What is a good PageSpeed score?
Google considers 90–100 good (green), 50–89 needs improvement (orange) and 0–49 poor (red). For SEO, aim for at least 90 on both mobile and desktop. Mobile scores are usually lower because Google throttles the CPU and network more aggressively.
What are Core Web Vitals?
Core Web Vitals are three specific metrics Google uses as a ranking signal: (1) LCP — Largest Contentful Paint, measures loading speed (target under 2.5s). (2) INP — Interaction to Next Paint, measures responsiveness (target under 200ms). (3) CLS — Cumulative Layout Shift, measures visual stability (target under 0.1).
Is page speed a Google ranking factor?
Yes — page speed is confirmed by Google as a ranking factor on mobile since 2018, and Core Web Vitals became a ranking signal in 2021. However, speed is a tiebreaker, not a trump card. Highly relevant content can still outrank a faster page.
Why does mobile score lower than desktop?
Google simulates mobile with a slower 4G network and 4× CPU throttling to mimic a mid-tier phone. Desktop uses a much faster connection and no CPU throttle. A 90 on mobile usually means near-perfect performance on real devices.
Why does the test take 15–30 seconds?
PageSpeed Insights runs a full Lighthouse audit — loading the page, measuring timings, running ~100 individual audits on images, CSS, JS, accessibility and SEO. It also fetches real-user CrUX data for the URL. The whole process is CPU-intensive and can take 15–40 seconds depending on the page.
Why do I get a rate-limit error?
The shared free tier of the Google PageSpeed API allows about 25 requests per 100 seconds per IP. If you hit the limit, wait a minute and try again, or add your own free Google API key in the "Advanced" section above for higher limits.
Is this page speed checker free?
Yes. It uses Google's free PageSpeed Insights API and runs entirely in your browser. No sign-up, no tracking. You can optionally add your own API key for higher rate limits.
