What Is JSON?

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight, text-based format for storing and exchanging structured data. It was formalized by Douglas Crockford in the early 2000s as a subset of JavaScript's object literal syntax — though today it's a language-independent standard used everywhere.

Every modern API speaks JSON. Every configuration file — from package.json to tsconfig.json — uses it. Every web framework produces and consumes it. It has effectively replaced XML for data interchange because it's simpler, smaller and directly parsable in every programming language.

The JSON data types

TypeExampleNotes
String"hello"Must use double quotes, not single
Number42, 3.14, -1e10No leading zeros, no NaN, no Infinity
Booleantrue, falseAlways lowercase
NullnullNot undefined, not None, not nil
Object{"key": "value"}Keys must be strings in double quotes
Array[1, 2, 3]Ordered, can mix types

That's the entire spec. Everything else — dates, binary data, custom types — has to be encoded into these six primitives.

Beautify vs Minify — when to use each

ModePurposeWhen to use
BeautifyAdds indentation and line breaksReading, debugging, code review, teaching
MinifyRemoves all whitespaceAPI payloads, network transmission, storage

Minifying a typical API response saves 30–50% of bytes. For a large dataset that's transmitted millions of times per day, this compounds into real bandwidth savings.

When to use the tree view

The tree view renders JSON as a collapsible hierarchy. It's useful when:

Sorting keys

JSON object key order is technically not guaranteed by the spec — but in practice every implementation preserves insertion order. Sorting keys alphabetically is useful for:

Sorting is recursive — every nested object gets sorted too.

Common use cases

Debug API Responses

Format a tangled API response to find the field you need.

Edit Config Files

Format package.json, tsconfig.json, or any config before editing.

Shrink Payloads

Minify JSON before sending it over the network or embedding it in HTML.

Explore Deep Data

Use the tree view to navigate complex nested structures.

Validate Before Deploy

Catch syntax errors in config files before they break production.

Compare JSON

Sort keys and format both documents for a clean diff.

Learn JSON

Format examples to see the exact structure with colours.

Prepare Data

Format JSON before pasting into databases or import tools.

Privacy and security

This JSON formatter runs entirely in your browser. Parsing uses the native JSON.parse, formatting uses JSON.stringify, and syntax highlighting is done with a custom tokenizer — all local. Your JSON never leaves your device. Safe for API keys, credentials, proprietary data and any other sensitive payload.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a JSON formatter do?
A JSON formatter takes compact or minified JSON and re-indents it with newlines and spaces so it's human-readable. It also validates the JSON structure and reports any syntax errors with their exact location.
What is the difference between formatting and minifying?
Formatting (or beautifying) adds indentation and line breaks to make JSON readable. Minifying does the opposite — it removes all unnecessary whitespace to produce the smallest possible payload for network transmission. Both produce valid JSON with identical data.
Why is my JSON invalid?
Common causes: trailing commas after the last item, unquoted property names, single quotes instead of double quotes, comments (JSON doesn't support them), NaN or Infinity values, or a missing closing bracket. The formatter shows the exact line and column where parsing failed.
Does the tool preserve key order?
Yes. JSON object key order is preserved by default. If you enable the Sort keys option, keys are re-ordered alphabetically at every level — useful for comparing two JSON documents or producing deterministic output for tests.
What is the tree view for?
The tree view renders JSON as a collapsible hierarchy. It's ideal for exploring large or deeply nested JSON structures — like API responses or configuration files — where scanning indented text is harder than clicking through a tree.
Is there a size limit?
There's no hard limit, but JSON above roughly 5 MB will start to feel sluggish in the browser because of live syntax highlighting. For very large files, disable live mode and click Format Now manually.
What is JSON5 or JSONC?
JSON5 and JSONC are extensions to JSON that allow comments, trailing commas and unquoted keys. Standard JSON does not. This tool validates strict JSON — if you paste JSON5 or JSONC with comments, it will report them as syntax errors.
Can I format JSON on mobile?
Yes. The tool is fully responsive. Tap the input area, paste your JSON, and the output appears immediately in the other panel.
Is my JSON uploaded to a server?
No. All parsing, validation and formatting happen locally in your browser using the native JSON.parse and JSON.stringify APIs. Your data never leaves your device.
Is this JSON formatter free?
Yes. It is 100% free, requires no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser. No limits, no watermarks, no premium tier.
