What Is HTML Formatting?

HTML formatting (also called beautifying or pretty-printing) re-indents HTML so it's readable by humans. Browsers don't care about whitespace between tags β€” a minified one-line HTML file renders identically to a deeply-indented one β€” but developers need readable markup to spot bugs, review changes, and maintain code.

Beautify vs Minify

ModePurposeWhen to use
BeautifyAdds line breaks and indentationReading, editing, debugging, code review
MinifyRemoves whitespace and commentsProduction deployment, reducing page size

Void elements β€” the ones without closing tags

HTML has a set of void elements that never have closing tags. The formatter knows about them and never generates a spurious closing tag:

Raw content β€” where whitespace is sacred

Four elements have contents that must be preserved verbatim β€” no re-indentation, no whitespace collapsing:

Block vs inline elements

Not all elements should be on their own line. Consider this:

<p>This is a <strong>bold</strong> word.</p>

If the formatter put every tag on its own line, the output would be ugly and could introduce unwanted whitespace between inline elements. Instead, the formatter classifies tags as block-level (div, p, h1-h6, ul, li, table, etc.) or inline (span, a, strong, em, code, etc.). If all children of an element are inline or text, they stay on one line.

Common use cases

Debug Minified HTML

Turn a one-line production HTML file back into readable markup.

Clean Diffs

Reformat before committing so Git diffs show real changes, not noise.

Reduce Page Weight

Minify HTML before deploying to cut a few KB off every page load.

Learn HTML Structure

See how nested elements relate to each other through indentation.

Code Review

Format HTML before submitting a PR for colleagues to review.

Extract Templates

Reformat scraped HTML to understand a template's structure.

Email Templates

Clean up hand-edited HTML emails before sending.

Documentation

Pretty-print HTML examples for tutorials and blog posts.

Privacy and security

This HTML formatter runs entirely in your browser. The tokenizer, tree builder, serializer and syntax highlighter are all local JavaScript. Your HTML never leaves your device β€” safe for internal tools, proprietary templates, and any other sensitive markup.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an HTML formatter do?
An HTML formatter re-indents HTML so it's easier to read. It adds line breaks between nested elements and consistent indentation levels, without changing how the HTML renders in a browser.
What is the difference between formatting and minifying HTML?
Formatting adds whitespace to make HTML readable β€” useful for humans. Minifying does the opposite β€” it removes unnecessary whitespace, comments and line breaks to produce the smallest possible file. Both produce identical rendered output.
Will reformatting break my HTML?
Whitespace between block-level elements has no rendering effect in HTML, so reformatting is safe for block layouts. Inline elements and text nodes are sensitive to whitespace. Always test the result visually after reformatting.
How does the formatter handle pre, textarea, script and style?
The contents of these elements are preserved verbatim β€” no re-indentation, no whitespace collapsing. This is important because pre and textarea render whitespace literally, and script/style contents are not HTML at all.
What about comments?
Comments are preserved by default in beautify mode. In minify mode they are removed. You can toggle the preserve-comments option in either mode.
Does the formatter need a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser using a custom character-by-character tokenizer. Your HTML never leaves your device.
What is the maximum HTML size?
There's no hard limit, but HTML above roughly 1 MB will start to feel slow because of live syntax highlighting. Turn off live update and use the Format Now button for very large files.
Is my HTML uploaded to a server?
No. All parsing, formatting and highlighting happens locally in your browser.
Is this HTML formatter free?
Yes. It is 100% free, requires no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser.
