About GST and VAT

GST (Goods and Services Tax) and VAT (Value Added Tax) are both indirect taxes collected at each stage of a supply chain. The difference is mostly one of naming and scope โ€” countries like India, Australia, Canada, Singapore and New Zealand call it GST, while the UK, most of Europe and the Middle East call it VAT. Both do the same job: they tax the value added at each step, and the final consumer ultimately bears the cost.

GST replaced a tangled web of separate taxes in many countries โ€” in India, for example, GST in 2017 replaced central excise, service tax, VAT, and a dozen other levies with a single unified tax. The four main Indian slabs (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) cover most goods and services, with a few special rates for gold and other items.

Adding tax (tax-exclusive)

When a price does not include tax, you add it on top:

Total = Base ร— (1 + Rate)

Tax = Base ร— Rate

For example, a $1,000 item at 18% GST: Tax = 1,000 ร— 0.18 = $180, Total = $1,180.

Removing tax (tax-inclusive)

When a price already includes tax, you work backwards to find the base:

Base = Total รท (1 + Rate)

Tax = Total โˆ’ Base

For example, a $1,180 invoice at 18% GST: Base = 1,180 รท 1.18 = $1,000, Tax = 1,180 โˆ’ 1,000 = $180.

CGST, SGST and IGST in India

For sales within a single Indian state, GST is split into two equal halves:

For example, at 18% GST within a state: CGST = 9%, SGST = 9%, and the total is the same as a single 18% charge โ€” just booked to two different authorities. Enable the "Split into CGST + SGST" option to see this breakdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between GST and VAT?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) and VAT (Value Added Tax) are essentially the same concept โ€” an indirect tax collected at each stage of a supply chain โ€” but with different names in different countries. India, Australia, Canada, Singapore and New Zealand use "GST"; the UK, most of Europe and the Middle East use "VAT". The mechanics are nearly identical.
How do I add GST to a price?
Multiply the base amount by (1 + rate). For example, a $1,000 item at 18% GST: 1,000 ร— 1.18 = $1,180. The tax portion is 1,000 ร— 0.18 = $180. Use "Add tax" mode in this calculator for this direction.
How do I remove GST from a total?
Divide the total by (1 + rate). For example, a $1,180 total at 18% GST: 1,180 รท 1.18 = $1,000 base amount, and the tax is $1,180 โˆ’ $1,000 = $180. Use "Remove tax" mode in this calculator for this direction.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?
In India, intra-state GST is split into two equal halves: CGST (Central GST, goes to the central government) and SGST (State GST, goes to the state government). For inter-state sales, a single IGST (Integrated GST) is collected by the centre, which later distributes the state's share. The total tax amount is the same either way โ€” only the distribution differs. Enable "Split into CGST + SGST" in this calculator to see the breakdown.
What are the current GST rates in India?
India has four main GST slabs: 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. Essential goods and services may be exempt (0%) or in the 5% slab. Most goods fall under 18%. Luxury items, tobacco and some cars fall under 28%, often with an additional cess. A special 3% rate applies to gold and jewellery. The exact rate depends on the HSN code of the goods or the SAC code of the service.
Why does removing GST from a total give a different tax figure than adding it?
This surprises many people. If you take $1,000 and add 18%, you get $1,180. But if you take $1,180 and remove 18% by multiplying by 0.82, you get $967.60 โ€” not the original $1,000. That is because the base for the reverse calculation is different. To correctly remove tax from an inclusive figure, you must divide by (1 + rate), not multiply by (1 โˆ’ rate). This tool uses the correct division method.
Is this GST/VAT calculator free?
Yes. It is 100% free, requires no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser. No length limits, no watermarks, no premium tier.
Is my data sent to a server?
No. All calculations happen locally in JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged โ€” safe for confidential pricing, invoice amounts and business financials.
Does this calculator handle compound or multi-stage GST?
No. This is a single-stage calculator โ€” it applies one tax rate to one amount. Multi-stage GST (where each link in the supply chain charges tax on its purchase price plus margin) is modelled by tax authorities using input tax credit; each business still uses the same single-stage formula, just on their own transaction.
How accurate is the result?
The calculation is exact to two decimal places using the standard formulas. Results match what tax authorities compute for the same inputs. If a country uses a rounding convention at a different decimal place (some European countries round VAT per line item, others per invoice), the result may differ by a few cents.
